Heard Ben Frazer of West Evergreen Avenue complain about high grass at vacant houses and heard Councilman James E. Fortune Sr., D-6th, announce a council finance committee meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday to discuss ways the city can remedy that problem.
Heard Bill Watterson of West Judson Avenue, vice president of the West Judson Citizens Watch, lament what he said is inaction by city officials concerning childhood lead paint poisoning and rental property registration.
Authorized the board of control to sign agreements to upgrade some grade crossings along the Central Columbiana and Pennsylvania rail line with new surfaces, lights and gates, using state and railroad funds, and permanently close other crossings to motor vehicles by installing curbs and guardrails at a cost of about $5,000 to the city. Crossings to be improved are those at Powersdale, Indianola and Lucius avenues and a pedestrian-only crossing at Auburndale Avenue. Crossings at Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Ravenwood and Judson avenues will close.
Authorized the board of control to seek bids and award a contract for janitorial services in city-owned buildings.
Raised the ceiling on expenditures for the Cleveland law firm of Ulmer and Berne for arena project-related work from $25,000 to $50,000.
Moved to a second reading an ordinance that would authorize the board of control to renew agreements with Youngstown State University for technical assistance and mapping services for the city's comprehensive plan and other projects. The technical assistance agreement is not to exceed $68,511. The mapping agreement is not to exceed $24,967.
