COLUMBIANA Auxiliary police will conduct bike-safety event
COLUMBIANA -- Free bicycle licenses, helmets and a drawing for two bicycles are among the rewards at the Columbiana Auxiliary Police bike safety program.
The main reward of attending the program, however, is that cyclists will come away with a street-worthy bike and more knowledge of bicycle safety, said Columbiana Patrolman Kevin Kloss, who is coordinating the event. Wearing a helmet and practicing safe bike-riding techniques can save lives, Kloss added.
The bike safety program is at 10 a.m. Saturday at the football field parking lot in Firestone Park.
Kloss said participants will receive free bike helmets on a first-come, first-served basis.
City participants will receive free bike licenses, and all participants will receive a certificate, he said.
At the beginning of the program, participants will watch a video on bicycle safety. Auxiliary officers will then inspect cyclists' bikes to see if tires, brakes and chains are in working order.
The officers will ensure bikes are safe to ride before participants work their way through the twists and turns of the bicycle course.
