UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH
Graduating chemistry major Corey Ballantyne, a 1999 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, is serving as a secondary school science instructor and trainer of teachers in Cameroon for the Peace Corps. She is the daughter of Kim Kengor of Austintown.
SAINT MARY'S COLLEGE, Notre Dame, Ind.
Graduating English literature major Cynthia Cvengros, a 1999 Campbell Memorial High School graduate, received honors on her senior comprehensive and was the recipient of the Grace Sullivan McGuire Award in Secondary Education and the Elisabeth A. Noel English Prize. She is the daughter of Jean and Michael Cvengros of Campbell.
YOUNGSTOWN STATE UNIVERSITY
Katherine A. Bair of Warren, a religious studies major, placed third and received $1,500 in the Elie Weisel Foundation for Humanity's annual Prize in Ethics essay awards competition.
Bair, a 1974 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School, received the honor for her essay, "From Nurturing Terror to Raising Hope." It was among 433 entries from nearly 400 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY,Slippery Rock, Pa.
Special education majors Lindsay Mielecki of Sharpsville and Jeremy J. Hall of New Castle are among 13 students inducted into Sigma Pi Epsilon Delta, a national special education honorary for students with grade point averages of 3.25 or higher.
Two local staff members of The Rocket, a weekly newspaper on campus, have won awards. Art major Liz Ellkis of Mercer won first place in the photo illustration category in a society of Professional Journalists contest. Chris Harlan of New Castle earned a third place photo essay award from the Society for Collegiate Journalists and earned the paper a certificate of merit from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold Circle Awards for a story and layout on "Groundhog Day."
UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON
Junior environmental biology major Karen Setty of Austintown has been named the recipient of the 2003 George Eagle Memorial Scholarship. Granted by the Ohio Environmental Health Association, the award recognizes academic achievement in environmental science. A graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, she is the daughter of Rick and Joan Setty.
Setty also will study wetland ecology this summer under a National Science Foundation Fellowship at Plattsburgh State University, Plattsburgh, New York.
MUSKINGUM COLLEGE, New Concord
Renee Shonk of Niles presented a poster on "Origin of Plumose Structure in Upper Devonian Siltstones, Conemaugh River Water Gap, Johnstown, Pennsylvania" at the Undergraduate Research Scholarship banquet for senior science and psychology majors. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Chuck Shonk.
Also presenting a poster was Jason Edward Kay, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Kay of Canfield. His research topic was "Cost-Benefit Analysis of the Reintroduced Pennsylvania Elk Herd."
DENISON UNIVERSITY, Granville
Sophomore psychology major Benjamin Wagner of Columbiana has been inducted into the university's chapter of the Psi Chi national psychology honor society. The 2001 Columbiana High School graduate is the son of Ray and Cathie Wagner.
CLARION UNIVERSITY, Clarion, Pa.
Junior biology major Dan Winkle of Canfield was part of a two-man team that presented "Lead Clearance and Efficacy of Oral Chelating Agents" at the 34th annual Commonwealth of Pennsylvania University Biologists meeting. A graduate of Canfield High School, Winkle is the son of Daniel and Mary Ann Winkle.
GANNON UNIVERSITY, Erie, Pa.
Freshman occupational therapy major Danielle Petrozelle of Masury was the first place winner in the university's 2003 Poetry Contest for her poem "3 a.m." She was honored for her work at the school's 26th annual English Awards Night. The 2002 graduate of Brookfield High School is the daughter of Daniel and Tina Petrozelle.
KENT STATE SALEM CAMPUS
Melissa McHam of Kensington and Matt Martin of Newton Falls have been awarded Davey Tree Expert Scholarships for outstanding performance in horticulture. Winning Phil Kozel Memorial Scholarships from the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association are McHam, Robin Leigh of Leavittsburg and Jerrel Gilley of Canfield.
JAMESON MEMORIAL HOSPITALSCHOOL OF NURSING, New Castle, Pa.
Graduating nursing major Tami Lynn Petrich of Boardman received a $2,000 Mark L. Rosenblum Student Nurse Scholarship Award to pursue her master's degree. She is the daughter of John and Jo Lynn Wayland.
CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY,Pittsburgh
Graduating chemistry major David Joseph Duran has been named the Andrew Carnegie Scholar, received a Chemistry Department award and a Senior Leadership Award and won College Research Honors for his research published in "Macromolecules." Duran was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa and the Phi Kappa Phi honor societies.
He is the son of Linee and Larry Duran of New Springfield.
