5 men face drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Five city men were arrested on drug charges Wednesday afternoon after members of the vice squad searched two different addresses.
Reuben Winston, 26, of Myrtle Avenue was charged with aggravated trafficking in cocaine and possession of drug abuse paraphernalia and Latwan Cherry, 23, of Halleck Street with drug abuse/cocaine after police found crack cocaine, including three plastic bags containing numerous rocks packaged for sale, during a search of a home in the 200 block of North Heights just before 4 p.m.
Nathaniel Sutton, 56, Joseph Montaro, 41, and Leonard Boone, 44, all of Ohio Avenue, were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after police found used crack pipes near each of them during a search of their home in the 2200 block shortly after 5 p.m.
Bound over to grand jury
STRUTHERS -- Joshua Michael Middleton, 20, of Fourth Street has been bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury, charged with carrying concealed weapons.
He had a preliminary hearing Wednesday before Judge James R. Lanzo.
He was arrested by Lowellville police May 4 after an officer spotted Middleton driving along a service road for the Norfolk Southern Railroad. When the officer stopped Middleton to find out why he was on the property, he spotted the butt of a handgun under the front seat.
A search of the vehicle uncovered a loaded handgun, a throwing knife, a loaded assault rifle and ammunition.
E. Palestine school boardawards building contracts
EAST PALESTINE -- The school board awarded the following contracts to the low bidders for classroom and media center additions at the middle school-high school complex:
UKreidler Construction Co. of Poland, general contractor, $3,084,402.
UKomar Plumbing Inc. of Boardman, plumbing, $559,259.
US.A. Comunale of Barberton, fire protection, $461,750.
UConti Corp. of Lowellville, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, $2,869,250.
UWayneCo Electrical Contractors Inc. of Mineral Ridge, $730,700.
Schools Superintendent Jeff Richardson said the contracts must be approved by the Ohio School Facilities Commission, which is funding the bulk of the project.
Grove City GE workersshare in Powerball win
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Twenty employees of the General Electric plant here are all $5,000 richer. They shared a $100,000 winning ticket in the interstate Powerball lottery in the April 5 drawing and got their money (less 27 percent federal withholding) from the Pennsylvania Lottery on Wednesday.
The presentation was made at Sam's BiLo Foods on Mill Street where the group bought its ticket.
Group members contribute $2 a week to buy Powerball tickets and have added four more members since its win, said George Perry, group spokesman.
Members have diverse plans for their winnings. Some are using it to pay for summer vacation rentals, others are buying four-wheelers for their kids and one is buying an old school bus to carry his son's archery team to meets, Perry said.
Works of Warren artistto be displayed at guild
SHARON, Pa. -- The work of Warren artist Irene Was will be featured in the "Vibrations; Plus Other Works" show opening Friday at the Valley Arts Guild, 10 Vine Ave.
Was, 82, will be recognized at a public reception at the guild from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. The show runs through June 30.
Was graduated from Kent State University in 2001 with a bachelor of fine arts degree at age 80. She has been painting since the mid-1970s but didn't really get serious about her art until a work was accepted into a juried show in 1994 at the Trumbull Art Gallery in Warren.
Guild hours are noon to 5 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays. It will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. this Saturday only.
Stolen checks cashed
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a man and woman have cashed $16,600 in stolen checks at local banks, including a $2,000 check at Sky Bank on Mahoning Avenue on May 19.
Reports state that a Sky Bank clerk became suspicious about one of the checks May 27 and called the bank's Andover office, where the checks were issued. The Andover office said the checks had been reported stolen from an Andover home.
