YOUNGSTOWN Mother charged in fatal van crash



YOUNGSTOWN -- A 31-year-old woman has been charged with vehicular homicide and other charges in a May 25 accident in which her 5-year-old son was killed.
Myra Hernandez of Magnolia Avenue was arrested Monday afternoon at the police station and charged with vehicular homicide, failure to comply with seat-belt and child-restraint requirements, failure to yield at a stop sign and operation in violation of a temporary instruction permit.
The van Myra Hernandez was driving westbound on Catalina Avenue was hit by a car heading south on Wirt Street. The boy, Alexander Rodriguez Hernandez, died in the crash.
Besides her son, the van carried eight children ranging in age from 1 to 13, and an adult female passenger, all taken to hospitals, police said.
Myra Hernandez told police she was distracted by the children in the van, the police report said.
The man driving the car was not injured.
