YOUNGSTOWN Man charged with leaving accident scene
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police charged William C. Pietz, 25, of East Delason Avenue with driving under suspension and leaving the scene of an accident after his car struck a 12-year-old bicyclist.
Police reports said witnesses told police the Lakewood Avenue boy failed to yield to traffic and rode his bicycle into the path of a white 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis about 5:15 p.m. Monday in front of an East Marion Avenue home on the city's South Side.
The report states that the vehicle struck the boy, flipping him into the air and causing him to strike his head on the windshield.
A passenger in the car told police that Pietz stopped briefly before speeding off. The report says the passenger then made Pietz stop the car and let him out so he could return to the scene.
Police found Pietz hiding behind a piece of plywood in the attic of a house in the 300 block of Williamson Avenue. His car was parked out of sight behind the garage. The report says Pietz told police he fled the scene because he was driving with a suspended license and had just gotten out of jail. Pietz also was wanted by police on a warrant for domestic violence.
The boy was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
