Arthritis benefits
AKRON -- Northeastern Ohioans will soon be training to walk or run a marathon, a triathlon or challenging hike to benefit the Arthritis Foundation.
Local training team recruitment meetings will be held June 11 at 7 p.m. at Barnes & amp; Nobles book store in Boardman and June 24 at the Eastwood Mall community room in Niles for the Akron Marathon schedule Oct. 11.

Brathwaite signswith Blue Jackets
COLUMBUS -- Veteran goaltender Fred Brathwaite has signed a one-year deal to be Marc Denis' backup with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Brathwaite, 30, played last year with St. Louis.
The contract was believed to have a base value of $500,000 with several performance bonus clauses.
Brathwaite was 12-9-4 with a 2.76 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage.
Denis appeared in 77 of 82 games and set an NHL record by playing 4,511 minutes. Brathwaite estimated he would be called on to play 20 or 30 games to relieve Denis.
Penn State freshman killed in accident
PHILADELPHIA -- An 18-year-old Horsham youth who was a walk-on quarterback at Penn State died when his car struck a tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder of a road, police said.
Gregory Hennigar was driving alone in a Toyota Camry when the crash happened at 2:20 a.m. Saturday on State Road in northeast Philadelphia, police department spokesman Sgt. Roland Lee said.
Hennigar was pronounced dead at Frankford-Torresdale Hospital, Lee said.
Hennigar, a two-year football captain at Father Judge High School in Philadelphia, had played in the Blue-White football scrimmage on April 26, completing 3-of-11 attempts for 27 yards.
He was expected to be a redshirt freshman this fall, and planned to study communications with an eye toward a broadcasting career.

Arizona to releaseMatt Williams
PHOENIX -- Matt Williams, the last of the original Diamondbacks and a five-time All-Star with 378 career home runs, has played his final game for Arizona.
The Diamondbacks announced Sunday that the 37-year-old third baseman has been designated for assignment. The move follows the team's acquisition of third baseman Shea Hillenbrand from Boston for pitcher Byung-Hyun Kim.

Montoya winnerat Monaco GP
MONTE CARLO, Monaco -- Juan Pablo Montoya won the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday, ending Michael Schumacher's three-race winning streak in Formula One.
Montoya held off Kimi Raikkonen in the final laps on the twisting street course for his second career victory. His other came at the Italian Grand Prix in 2001.
Raikkonen, in a McLaren-Mercedes, was second, 0.6 seconds behind at the finish of the 78-lap, 2.08-mile course. Raikkonen extended his standings lead over Schumacher, 48 points to 44.
Schumacher, in a Ferrari, was third, 1.7 seconds behind Montoya. Schumacher was looking to equal Ayrton Senna's record of six Monaco victories.
Italian completescycling victory
MILAN, Italy -- Gilberto Simoni of Italy won the Giro d'Italia on Sunday for the second time in three years after building an insurmountable lead in the Alps.
The climbing specialist completed the three-week race with a 21-mile time trial that amounted to a victory lap in an event leading to next month's Tour de France.
During Sunday's stage, a small plane crashed about 500 yards from the course. The two people on board were killed, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.
Simoni finished 7 minutes, 6 seconds ahead of countryman Stefano Garzelli in the final standings. Yaroslav Popovych of Ukraine was third.
