Michaelis 10th
COLUMBUS -- Youngstown State junior Kurt Michaelis finished in 10th-place with a time of 3 minutes, 58.52 seconds, at the NCAA Midwest track and field regionals Saturday at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Michaelis, who qualified for the finals Friday with a time of 3:49.05, was in the field with the top four finishers in the event in the indoor season and needed to finish in the top five to move on to the NCAA Championships. Michigan freshman Nick Willis won the event in 3:45.45.
Penguins addfour divers
YOUNGSTOWN -- Cortney Harless of Steubenville, Lynea Harrill of Mayfield and Erin Mazzant of Beaver Falls, Pa., have signed letters of intent to continue their diving careers at Youngstown State.
The Penguins also added Kristen Moffatt of Conway, Pa., who transferred from West Virginia.
Harless, a senior at Steubenville High, was a district qualifier and finished 10th at the Ohio Central District Championships.
Harrill placed 16th at the Northeast District meet, while Mazzant, who is a senior at Pine Ridge High, placed 14th at the 2003 Pennsylvania state championships. She is a two-time state qualifier.

Injured fans released
HARTFORD -- Seven of the 10 fans injured Friday night when a walkway collapsed at Sharon Speedway were treated and released from area hospitals, according to Sharon Speedway officials.
Sharon Regional Health System officials said two of the injured were admitted to their facility last evening, but due to new privacy laws, would not disclose the fans' injuries or say if they had since been released.
Speedway officials were unable to obtain information on the individual transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in Warren. Crews at the scene last night, however, reported that most of the injuries were minor.
The fans were watching the O'Reilly World of Outlaws & quot;A & quot; Main feature at the Hartford track when a sudden heavy downpour sent the crowd running for cover. A walkway at the base of the west grandstands, approximately 10 feet in length and 4 feet from the ground, gave way, causing some fans to fall.
Speedway and Hartford Township Fire Department officials are working together to determine the cause of the collapse. Hartford Township Fire Chief Ben Anspach expects to file a report in a few days.
Mercer washed out
MERCER, Pa. -- Rain washed out the Bill Emig Memorial Legacy Series at Mercer Raceway Park Saturday.
Long drivers sought
VIENNA -- Area golf leagues, clubs or courses may qualify one individual to participate in the women's long drive qualifying event June 7 at Squaw Creek Country Club.
The top four will qualify for the Schwebel's Amateur Long Drive Contest which is held in conjunction with the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic.
The contest -- both amateur division and an LPGA division -- will be held July 10.

Junior golf clinic
VIENNA -- Taco Bell will sponsor a junior golf clinic on Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Squaw Creek Country Club's driving range.
The clinic is open to youngsters ages 4-through 17 and will include instruction by LPGA Teaching Division members. All participants will receive a t-shirt, while refreshments and clubs are provided.
Youngstown State University will hold a junior clinic on June 9 at Squaw Creek in conjunction with the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. The event begins at 2:30 p.m. and will include instruction by four LPGA Tour professionals.

Bud's wins 'AA' game
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bud's jumped out early and then held on to beat Jolly Joe's 6-4 in a Class AA baseball league game Saturday at Oakland Field.
The winners pounded out 13 hits led by Matt Raiti who had two doubles and also picked up the mound win. Mark Nightingale and Jared Bogan had doubles for Jolly Joe's.
Shaffo is MVPof Chaney baseball
YOUNGSTOWN -- John Shaffo was presented with the Most Valuable Award at the Chaney High baseball awards banquet.
Other awards were given to Chris Hlinka, John Dolecki Memorial; Aaron Boris, Iron Arm Pitching; Mike DeNiro, Golden Glove; John Shaffo, Leading Hitter; Sam Shaffo, Gatorade Rookie of the Year and Bryan Kopachy, Gatorade Will to Win Athlete.
Bizzarro on card
CHESTER, W.Va. -- Welterweight Lou Bizzarro (20-2) of Erie, Pa. has been added to the June 12 fight card at Mountaineer Track and Gaming Resort.
An opponent is yet to be named for Bizzarro, who defeated Marty Robins in an eight-round unanimous decision at Turning Stone Casino, April 4.
Pittsburgh's undefeated heavyweight Abraham Okine (7-0, 5 KOs) will fight Lenzie Morgan (15-10, 7 KOs) of Youngstown.
A welterweight bout will pit Marcos 'The Terminator' Primera (14-4, 9 KOs) of Durham, North Carolina against 'The Jackal' Guerra (10-2, 5 KOs) of Columbus.
Eric 'Super' Starr (12-9, 5 KOs), also of Durham will take on Steve 'Scarface' Fisher (13-12 6 KOs) of Akron in a cruiserweight bout.
Slated to fight with opponents yet to be announced are lightweight Armand Horn (5-0, 5 KOs) of St. Ignacius, Mich.; middleweight Tom Wilt (10-2, 2 KOs) of Altoona, Pa.; Rayco Saunders (6-0, 3 KOs) of Pittsburgh and Chris Koval (3-0, 2 KOs of Youngstown.
The event is presented by Simons Promotions and will be located in Mountaineer's grand ballroom. The card will start at 7:30 p.m. with general seating $15 and reserved gold seating $25.
Benefit golf outing
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township Firemen's Association Benefit Golf Outing is scheduled for June 30 at Reserve Run Golf Course. Registration for the 18-hole outing will begin at 7 a.m. with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
Coffee and doughnuts will be served at registration. Social hour, which will feature a steak dinner and prizes, will start at 12:30 p.m. Beverages will be provided on the golf course.

Boardman freshman Michelle Bistrica won the 3200-meters in 12 minutes, 0.6 seconds, at the Division I district meet last Saturday.
She was inadvertantly omitted from the story about the meet.

Bengals agree to terms with Matthews
CINCINNATI -- Free-agent quarterback Shane Matthews agreed to a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team, and Matthews' agent, Steve Mandell, also declined to comment on the contract.
