hTimes' book answersgardening questions
Just about any gardening question you can think up, from what soil pH means to which tree grows in Brooklyn, probably has been answered at some time in the New York Times' "Garden Q & amp;A" column. Now the best of that information has been compiled into a book, "The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions & amp; Answers."
The hefty paperback covers the gardening gamut, including flowers, lawns, trees, shrubs, kitchen gardens and houseplants. It's divided according to plant categories and other topics to make finding answers to your own questions easier. Additional information from the current "Garden Q & amp;A" columnist, Leslie Land, expands on some of the topics.
"1000 Gardening Questions & amp; Answers" is published by Workman Publishing. Price is $19.95.
YardGlove lotion helpsmake cleanup easier
You can usually tell gardeners by the dirt under their nails.
Not anymore, though. Cincinnati's UpCountry Products has developed a lotion designed to keep gardeners' hands cleaner.
The product, YardGlove Barrier Lotion, is applied to hands and arms before gardening to keep dirt from penetrating the skin and make washing up easier. Its ingredients include oatmeal and beeswax, so it protects and moisturizes skin without feeling greasy or sticky. The protection lasts several hours, or until the lotion is washed off with soap and water. Water alone won't remove it under normal conditions, so you can water your plants or work in wet soil without losing the lotion's protection.
YardGlove is available at some garden centers and can also be ordered at www.yardglove.com. In most stores, a 4-ounce bottle sells for less than $10.
