DRIVING Road rules
Here's what you need to know to drive in Ohio:
SPEED LIMITS
65 mph on Ohio Turnpike and interstate highways outside urbanized areas, except 55 mph for vehicles weighing more than 8,000 pounds and any commercial bus. 55 mph on interstate highways inside urban areas. 60 mph or 55 mph as posted on highways outside municipal corporations unless signs indicate reduced limits. State routes, controlled access highways and expressways inside municipal corporations -- 50 mph, unless lower speed is established. Through highways within municipalities outside business districts -- 35 mph unless otherwise posted. School zones, 20 mph.
SPEED CHECK DEVICES
Mechanical, laser, radar and aerial. No state law requires warning signs.
RADAR DETECTORS
Permitted except in commercial vehicles.
CHILD RESTRAINTS
Mandatory from birth to age 4 and 40 pounds. First offense, $100 fine; second, $200. Fine nonwaivable.
SEAT BELTS
Mandatory for driver and front seat passenger. Driver fine, $30, passenger, $25.
TURN/HAND SIGNAL
Left turn, arm horizontal; right turn, arm upward; stop or slow, arm downward. Signaling distance of 100 feet required. Bicyclist cannot use right hand to signal right turn.
SCHOOL BUSES
Vehicles inside and outside municipalities must stop while bus is loading or unloading or red signals are flashing. On four-lane highways, motorists need not stop if on other roadway.
NO PASSING ZONE
Indicated by signs or solid yellow line in driver's lane. Crossing line is prohibited.
PASSING ON RIGHT
Permitted when vehicle is making left turn or on roads with two or more lanes of traffic in each direction. May not leave roadway to pass.
HEADSETS
Wearing of radio headset while operating a motor vehicle is illegal.
BAREFOOT DRIVING
Permitted, not recommended.
