COLLEGE BASEBALL Anderson's homers lead Buckeyes
Ohio State defeated number-four national seed Auburn, 6-2.
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) -- Steve Caravati figures Ohio State just needs a few homers and good pitching to get into a super regional. In other words, more of the same.
Drew Anderson had his second straight two-homer game, a pair of two-run shots, as the Buckeyes beat Auburn 6-2 on Saturday in the NCAA tournament.
"We're looking to come out [today] and do the same things we did all weekend," said Caravati, who also homered for the second straight game.
The Buckeyes (43-19) hit four homers to force No. 4 national seed Auburn (41-20) into an elimination game with Clemson and advance to meet the winner today.
Caravati and Christian Snavely added solo blasts as three of Ohio State's first four hits off starter Arnold Hughey (6-6) were homers.
"We were very efficient on offense," Ohio State coach Bob Todd said. "It seemed like every time we got a hit, we produced runs."
Winning pitcher
Mike Madsen (8-1) gave up runs in the first and second but didn't allow much else before running into trouble with one out in the ninth.
"He was the key to the whole ball game," Todd said. "I thought he was outstanding ."
Madsen, who has won his last eight decisions, was lifted with runners on first and second. Matt Davis got Derek Sain to ground out to second and struck out Chuck Jeroloman looking for his 13th save.
"Their starting pitcher was one of the best we've seen," Auburn coach Steve Renfroe said. "It was just one of those days. They whipped us."
Anderson's second homer, in the seventh, plated Brett Garrard, who led off with an infield single off reliever Cory Dueitt.
Caravati, who has driven in 17 runs in seven postseason games, also singled and was hit by a pitch.
Sain doubled twice for the Tigers while Scott Schade hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the second. Sean Gamble doubled and singled as Auburn outhit the Buckeyes 8-7.
Nailed
The Tigers' leadoff man, Gamble, was thrown out at the plate in the seventh by left fielder Wes Schirtzinger, who had entered the game to start the inning.
"That was the game right there," Caravati said. "We felt it in the dugout. We felt the momentum shift."
Ohio State has won five straight games, including a three-game run to capture the Big Ten tournament.
The Buckeyes have seven homers in the first two regional games.
Todd said he would pitch Chris Hanners (4-4, 5.82) today.
Anderson said Ohio State is proving the strength of the Big Ten Conference, even in SEC country.
"We don't get a lot of credit up north all the time," he said. "We play great baseball up north."
