AUSTINTOWN -- Township police charged two men who were fleeing Liberty police about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Dwayne E. Scott, 37, of Unity Road, New Springfield, is charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia and with resisting arrest. Anthony J. DeAngelis, 33, of Grimm Heights Road, Struthers, is charged with resisting arrest.
The men were in a pickup truck that went off New Road and got stuck. An Austintown police dog helped find the men, who were turned over to Liberty police.
DeAngelis was caught by Lt. Robert Gavalier, who was bitten by a police dog in the upper left arm during the arrest. Gavalier was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
The chase in Liberty began after police received a report of a robbery in progress at Smoker Friends and Cigarette Express on Belmont Avenue.
Liberty police reports
Liberty police said DeAngelis entered the store around 6:40 p.m. and began filling a brown paper bag with cartons of cigarettes. When he tried to leave, a clerk approached him in the parking lot and the two began to argue, reports said.
DeAngelis reportedly dropped the bag, ran to the parking lot of Bob Evans and got into the truck driven by Scott. Officers spotted the vehicle getting onto Interstate 80 and attempted to stop the men.
DeAngelis is charged by Liberty police with felony robbery and on three warrants from Boardman police charging him with two counts of theft and one count of robbery.
Scott is charged by Liberty police with complicity, failure to comply with the order of an officer and reckless operation.
