Michaelis advances
COLUMBUS -- Junior Kurt Michaelis qualified for the finals in the 1,500-meter run at the NCAA Midwest Regional Finals on Friday.
Michaelis finished with a time of 3:49.05 to place sixth in his heat and grab the final spot in the finals today at 7:23 p.m. He will head into the race with the ninth-best time, with the top five moving on to the NCAA National Championships in Sacramento in two weeks.
Also for the Penguins, Eugene Harris, the Horizon League Champion in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, finished with a time of 22.05 in the 200.
Along with Michaelis, Beth Hochstetler will compete in the discus today at 5:30 p.m. Michaelis also qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase and may compete in the event at 8:30 p.m. pending his performance in the 1,500.

Boardman catcherheaded to Gannon
BOARDMAN -- Sean Lysowski, a senior catcher on the Boardman High baseball team, has accepted a baseball scholarship to Gannon University, an NCAA Division II school in Erie, Pa.
Lysowski, who has a 3.1 grade-point average, has played for the Line Drive Academy team in the Youngstown Class B League for the past four seasons under coach Scott Knox, who also coaches the Boardman High team.
Last year for Line Drive Academy, Lysowski had a .333 batting average and a .976 fielding percentage.
He also played for the BB Rooners traveling team last fall.
Gannon is a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and is coached by Rick Iacobucci.
Howland playersdecide on Thiel
HOWLAND -- Tight end Chris DiGiovanni and flanker/safety Steve Boyle, both of the Howland High football team, will attend Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., to study business and resume their football careers.
DiGiovanni (6-0, 195) was a two-year starter who received an 83-percent blocking grade. He was selected to the All-Metro Athletic Conference and All-Trumbull County first teams.
Boyle also was a two-year starter with great speed who led Howland with 18 catches for 375 yards and four touchdowns. He also was a defensive ace with three interceptions and four pass breakups.
Boyle was named to the All-Trumbull County team.
Soccer teammakes semifinals
The Mahoning Valley Select U-16 boys soccer team competed in the Dayton Warrior Soccer Classic.
MVS advanced into the semifinal round by defeating the Heartland Eagles of Michigan (3-2) and Team Cincinnati Thunder (3-1) before suffering a loss to the NUHC Soccer Club of Indiana.
MVS lost to Fort Wayne, Ind. Soccer Club 1-0 in OT.
Team members were Anthony Colaluca and Andrew Fontanarosa of Austintown; Shawn Dunn of Beaver Local; Tyler Thayer and Conor Faloon of East Liverpool; Malik Mohammad of Howland; Kyle Schimley of Warren JFK; Kevin Miller of Mooney; Lenny Liguore of Poland; Keith Getzinger, Andrew Loudon and Jordan Nannah of Salem; Keith Little of Ursuline; and Chris Penman and Omar Omar of Warren Harding. Coaching the team were Joe DeMay of Poland and Paul Colaluca of Austintown, under the direction of head trainer Neil Fowler of Austintown.
Youngstown teamwins Euclid title
The Youngstown Elite Soccer team won four straight games to win the Euclid Memorial Classic 15-16-year-old girls division championship.
Youngstown posted wins over Gahanna Arsenal (1-0), AC Rebels (3-0), Mentor (5-1) and then Gahanna Arsenal again in the championship game (3-1).
The Youngstown team consists of Amanda Perry, Lindsey Thou, Jessica Pallante and Tyler Fridley (Niles); Samantha Stanich, Sara Weigel, Jill Roemer, Maureen Malone, Tori Rumble and Stephanie Armstrong (Poland); Christina Herold, Lisa Bell and Samantha Cox (West Branch); Katie Stoll and Kerry Reardon (Boardman); and Sarah Howley (Canfield).
Haefke competesin bowling tourney
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. -- Teri Haefke of Austintown finished 32nd in the Professional Women's Bowling Association's U.S. Open this week.
Haefke, who competed as an amateur, finished with a fourth-round 32-game pinfall of 6,824.
The top 24 advanced.
