SCORING HIGH List of criteria
There are seven criteria to be named a "School of Promise" by the state Department of Education. Schools must:
Have a poverty level of 50 percent or higher.
Not be in "school improvement" status, as determined by federal guidelines.
Have at least two years of reported proficiency test data.
Have a passage rate of 75 percent or higher in math and/or reading in at least one grade (fourth, sixth or ninth) in 2001-02 and a minimum 50-percent passage rate in these areas in 2000-01.
Have a proficiency passage rate of 75 percent or higher in at least one grade for racial or ethnic groups of five or more test-takers.
Have at least 60 percent of pupils take the test.
