School board to meet
LORDSTOWN -- The board of education will meet in special session at 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. The meetings will be executive sessions to interview candidates for superintendent. The board's regular meeting is changed to June 25, with the work session at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting at 7.
Disposing of waste
CHARDON -- Residents of Trumbull and Geauga counties can dispose of old paint, automotive fluids, pesticides, propane tanks and other waste not accepted at the curb from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Geauga County Engineer's Yard on Merritt Road. Items not accepted at the event, sponsored by the Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District, include industrial and medical waste, tires, explosives, asbestos and appliances.
Kids' activity program
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- UPMC Horizon Wellness Center's "Movin' and Groovin'" physical activity program for children ages 4-12 will meet from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from June 3 through Aug. 23. 'A Walk of Life' at park
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning Valley African-American Women's Wellness Walk, called "A Walk of Life," will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 21 at Wick Park, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. The American Heart Association has launched the walk to raise awareness of heart disease and stroke among black women. The event is free and open to area churches, companies, organizations and individuals. It features volleyball competition for ages 12-16, health screenings, music and dance entertainment, and a healthy cooking demonstration. To preregister, call the AHA at (330) 965-9230.
Honor for Weed and Seed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's Weed and Seed program, based in some South Side neighborhoods, is one of 10 nationwide to receive a coordination honor award from the U.S. Department of Justice for its Ohio Adult Parole Authority project to reduce the number of repeat offenders. The APA opened a satellite office on Market Street. Weed and Seed is a strategy that involves organizations, police and residents to reduce criminal activity in high-crime target areas. The area has seen a 56-percent decrease in the number of reported crack houses, a 16-percent drop in homicides, a 17-percent drop in rapes, a 27-percent drop in robberies and aggravated assaults and a 25-percent drop in stolen vehicles, the justice department says.
Streetscape rescheduled
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's Streetscape planting and cleanup planned downtown Saturday was rescheduled for today because of rain. Cleanup will begin at 8 a.m. and continue through the afternoon. Participants should bring garden tools, gloves and brooms and meet in front of BW-3 Restaurant for assignments.
Housing reform forum
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Southern Boulevard Block Watch will have a housing reform forum at 7 p.m. June 18 at St. Dominic Parish Center on Southern Boulevard. Betsy Johnquest, chairwoman of the Mahoning Valley Women's Political Caucus, and Maureen O'Neil Farris, chairwoman of the city's Housing Code Enforcement Task Force, will make presentations.
