RAY SWANSON | Keystoner Titans open PAC schedule against champ
Except for the reversal of home and away dates, Westminster College's 2003 football schedule is identical to the 2002 slate.
The Titans will play a 10-game schedule in 2003, the program's fourth season under Coach Jerry Schmitt, who has compiled a record of 18-11.
Last year, Schmitt's unit posted a 6-4 campaign, including a 4-1 mark in the Presidents Athletic Conference and a second-place finish.
Five PAC games
Westminster will once again play a five-game PAC schedule, beginning with a home battle at Harold Burry Stadium against defending PAC champion and NCAA Division III playoff participant Washington & amp; Jefferson on Oct. 4. Westminster will also play host to league rivals Thiel (Homecoming on Oct. 18), and Grove City (Oct. 25). They will travel to PAC opponents Bethany (Oct. 11) and Waynesburg (Nov. 15).
The Titans will compete in five non-conference encounters, opening the season at Walsh (ranked No. 23 in final 2002 NAIA poll) in a game to be played at Fawcett Stadium adjacent to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton on Sept. 6. An open date on Sept. 13 follows.
Then Westminster rolls out the red carpet to Mansfield University in their home opener at Burry Stadium on Sept. 20.
Other non-conference contests include road games at Allegheny on Sept. 27 and a trip to Kentucky to face Thomas More (Nov. 8), as well as a home game against Frostburg State (Md.) on Nov. 1.
Westminster leads in all of the series against their 2003 opponents with the exception of Thomas More. The two teams have met only once previously (in 2002) with the Titans losing, 24-0.
Soccer camp
Westminster College soccer coaches and players will be conducting a one-week soccer camp for children in grades 1-8 at the Hess Sports Complex in Neshannock Township.
All of the children will be coached by their skill level and skills will be taught through games and activities.
Camp director will be Girish Thakar of the men's and women's soccer teams at Westminster.
In 2002, Thakar led the men's team to a 16-4-2 record, setting a school record for wins in a season. The Titans also won the PAC title and made an appearance at the NCAA National Championships.
Thakar also began his first season as the coach of the women's team, leading the Titans to a record-breaking 16-6-2 season and their first PAC title and appearance at the NCAA National Championships.
The camp will run from 10 a.m. until noon daily from July 21 to July 25. Cost is $50 per camper which includes a T-shirt.
