Volunteering
Volunteer Services Agency, a United Way Agency, is a local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors three programs: the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which helps people 55 and older use their life experience skills in their communities; Volunteer Service to Seniors, which provides assistance and companionship to the elderly living independently in their homes; and the Volunteer Center, which helps people of all ages connect with local nonprofit agencies that need volunteer assistance. Short-term volunteer help is needed for these agencies:
American Cancer Society: People needed to assist with set-up of Relay for Life events June 20-21 at Campbell Memorial High School and June 27-28 at Sebring High School.Canfield Fair: Booth sitters needed to help staff exhibits at the fair's Medical Building. The fair runs from Aug. 26 to Sept. 1.Jubilee Gardens: People needed to plow and maintain the gardens.LPGA Giant Eagle Classic: Volunteers needed to help with all aspects of the tournament June 9-15.Special Olympics: People needed to direct athletes and provide hugs at the annual track and field meet June 14 at Austintown Fitch High School.Summer Festival of the Arts: People needed to help with the information booth, children's tent, and registration July 12-13 at Youngstown State University.Western Reserve Historical Society: Volunteers needed at Loghurst to dress in costume and help with the Father's Day ice cream social.
Long-term commitments are needed for these organizations:
Beatitude House: People needed to mentor children once a month or more.Beight Farm: Individuals or groups needed to assist with planting, weeding and picking produce. All produce is donated to the needy.Citizen Corps: Training provided for people who will be called upon to help their community in case of a disaster.Family Services Agency: Individuals or groups wanted to sort items in a home.Forum Health: Volunteers needed to help with children in the respite care program, which runs from June through August.Goodwill Industries: People needed to read for the blind in Goodwill's Radio Reading program.Potter's Wheel/Warren: Tutors needed for adult women.Rose Melnick Medical Museum: Docents needed Monday through Friday on an as-needed basis. The museum is at YSU.RSVP: People needed to help with mailings and various community projects.United Way: Volunteers needed for general clerical help and to assist with public relations.Volunteer Services to Seniors: People needed to make commitment to serve as caretakers to seniors. Caretakers provide transportation, assist with grocery shopping, and make reassurance calls.YWCA: Volunteers needed to rock babies, assist with youth programs or do clerical work.
