Sewers have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills
Simple rules govern three contests that are open to those who sew.
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
If you'd like to enter a sewing competition this year, here are a few to consider:
UThe fourth Annual "Inspired by Threads" Fashion Challenge has been announced. Entry forms and a slide or photo should be sent to Threads magazine by July 31 for the first round of judging. Your new creation must be inspired by any garment or technique that appears in Threads issues 103 (Oct.-Nov. 2002) through 108 (Aug.-Sept. 2003.) Winners will be announced at a fashion show Sept. 20 at the American Sewing Expo in Novi. For rules, see the magazine, call 800-283-7252, Ext. 3523, or click on www.threadsmagazine.com or www.americansewingexpo.com.
UTo celebrate the 25th anniversary of the American Sewing Guild, Simplicity Pattern Co. has introduced a commemorative pattern, No. 5687. It's a wardrobe of simple classic pieces -- tank top, cardigan, pant and skirt, intended to be the basis for ASG's Creativity Contest. Entry deadline is June 10. Contest categories were selected to encourage all ASG members, from novice to experienced. Send photos and fabric swatches with your entry form to ASG Creativity Contest, 9660 Hillcroft, Ste. 516, Houston, Texas 77096. For details, see the national newsletter, or call the Greater Detroit Chapter at 248-828-3079, or click on www.asg.org.
UHancock Fabrics is sponsoring the Quilt of Dreams contest to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, with a goal of $1 million this year. The lap quilts, to be 45 inches by 60 inches, should express the dreams of children who are patients there. They must incorporate at least one new cotton fabric ($6.99 per yard) from Hancock's exclusive 2003 line of prints inspired by the children's artwork.
Visit local stores for a packet of information. Quilts for the contest can be delivered to any store by Aug. 4. For more information click on www.hancockfabrics.com.
