WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA Three-run fifth inning gives Grove City win



Grove City's 6-4 victory decided the District 10 Class AA baseball championship.
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Grove City High baseball team defeated Hickory, 6-4, Wednesday in the District 10 Class AA championship game.
The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Marty Heben singled and Greg Mentrek brought him home with a single.
Grove City responded with three runs in the third inning after Mike Bashline reached on a Hickory error. After Josh Hodge singled, Dustin Caylor hit a three-run homer.
So close, then far
In the fifth inning, Hickory's Dustin Kulka doubled to center field and another RBI single by Mentrek cut the score to 3-2.
The Eagles responded with three runs in the fifth after Bashline beat out an infield single. After Jeremy Hedegore was issued an intentional pass and Caylor drove in his fourth run with an RBI single to left.
Brian Sansom hit a two-run double for the 6-2 advantage.
The Hornets tallied twice in the seventh inning on a double by Craig Osborne, a fielder's choice by Kulka and a two-run double to center by Mentrek.
Sansom earned the save when he ended the game by striking out Chad Fitzgerald.
Hedegore worked 62/3 innings, allowing nine hits and four runs. He walked one and struck out 14.
Hickory will face the District 6 champion, either Philipsburg-Osceola or Martinsburg Central, on Monday at a time and site to be determined.
Grove City will meet the third-place finisher out of the WPIAL which will be either Yough or Shenango.
Softball
Grove City defeated Corry, 4-3, and will meet the third-place finisher out of the WPIAL, either Ellwood City or Riverside. That game will be played on Monday at a place and time to be determined.
