YOUNGSTOWN -- Debra A. Zamudio, 45, of Boardman-Canfield Road turned herself in to police Thursday on a theft warrant that charges her with taking atlases from her employer, the Youngstown Board of Education. Zamudio, a secretary for the board, is accused of taking the items last month. At arraignment Thursday, Zamudio pleaded innocent, and a pretrial hearing was set for June 26. Zamudio posted a $2,500 bond, with 10 percent permitted for her release.
Fireworks theft case
YOUNGSTOWN -- A security guard at B.J. Alan Fireworks detained for police an employee reportedly seen concealing in bushes a box that contained 12 mortar shells worth $239, reports show. Aaron Sponaugle, 24, of East Delason Avenue was charged with theft. The security guard told police he saw Sponaugle take the box out of a pile of trash that he was dumping Thursday and hide it in the bushes near the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard business.
Disorderly conduct at bar
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three Trumbull County men thrown out of Jay Jay's bar on Market Street were charged with disorderly conduct at 2 a.m. today when a fight continued outside, police said. An officer told Geoffrey Presco, 21, and Joseph Payich, 21, both of Illinois Avenue, McDonald, and Todd E. Cope, 20, of Smithsonian Avenue, Girard, to get in their cars and leave, but they continued to throw punches, reports show.
Cause of death at lake
YOUNGSTOWN -- Jim Talley of Delaware Avenue, who was found dead in Lake Glacier in Mill Creek Park, likely fell or slipped into the water, said park Police Chief Nathaniel Pinkard. No signs of foul play were seen, the chief said. Talley, 42, had ridden his bike to the park and was seen fishing earlier that morning by park police, Pinkard said. His body was found at 10:15 a.m. Thursday by Lt. Bruce Emery in water off Price Road near the Old Log Cabin. A coroner's ruling is pending on the cause of death.
Underage alcohol sale
YOUNGSTOWN -- Rashid K. Ahmed, 28, of Butler, Pa., a clerk at City Provision Market on Taft Avenue, was charged Thursday evening with selling alcohol to an underage person, police said. Ahmed's brother translated for the vice cops, who had sent in a 19-year-old to buy beer, because Ahmed speaks no English. Police advised the brother that having Ahmed work at the store was problematic because Ahmed did not understand what officers meant when they told him he had to check identification before selling alcohol.
Sentencing postponed
YOUNGSTOWN -- Sentencing of a second suspect in the muggings of some walkers at Wick Park has been postponed until next week. Christopher McBride, 21, of Berwick Avenue was to be sentenced Thursday by Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. It was postponed because McBride's lawyer, Ronald Yarwood, was involved in a jury trial in another courtroom. The matter now is set for Tuesday. Co-defendant Jamal Bullock, 31, of Liberty Road was sentenced last week to 28 years in prison for his role in the August 2002 muggings. Each has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of aggravated robbery, robbery and burglary.
Money theft from church
YOUNGSTOWN -- A woman who worked with church finances stole some $30,000 from Mount Zion Church, 3300 Hudson Ave., Pastor Bennie Hardin told police Thursday. The Austintown woman stole the church's money from a bank by cashing a series of checks she wrote between March 2001 and April 2002, and she agreed to make restitution to the church in $750-a-month installments, the pastor said. She made payments for about six months and stopped, he said. The police report said she still owes the church $24,950. Police reports available late Thursday didn't show any formal charges filed or arrests made in this case.
Public indecency case
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old boy accused of masturbating in a classroom in the presence of two girls at the Youngstown Alternative School on East Wood Street was arrested on a charge of public indecency Thursday afternoon. The Fairgreen Avenue boy called the girls by name and laughed as he masturbated, the principal told police. The boy was issued a court summons and taken home by police.
