New Chaney coach
YOUNGSTOWN -- Christine Maga has been selected as the new girls basketball coach at Chaney High. She will be assisted by Dennis Miller, John Faison and Alan Thorne.
Maga was an assistant at East High for 10 years before becoming the coach for six more until its closing. She also has coached softball for four years, the last three as an assistant at Chaney.
A 1978 Ursuline High graduate, Maga was a four-year letterwinner on the track and field team. She also was a three-year letter winner in field hockey at Youngstown State.
This is Maga's 20th year with Youngstown City Schools, where she teaches physical education and health.
Boardman studentshonored by OHSAA
BOARDMAN -- Four Boardman High students and one coach have been honored by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Monica Cuevas, Dave Sypert, Allison Brager and Tom Zetts, along with coach Denise Gorski, have been selected to receive awards.
Cuevas and Sypert have been chosen as recipients of the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to a male and female student who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote sportsmanship in their school and community.
Brager and Zetts have been selected to receive the Scholar-Athlete Award, in recognition of their academic achievements while participating in athletics at Boardman.
Denise Gorski, Boardman's track and field coach, has been selected to receive the Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Award for her leadership during the 2002-03 school year.
James, Rupewin 5K race
MECCA -- David James of Canton and Michelle Rupe of Green were the overall winners in the Mosquito Lake Chase 5-Kilometer Race held Memorial Day at Maplewood High School.
James, 39, won the men's division in 16:14.5 while Rupe dominated the women in 19:00.6.
Completing the top five overall were Dave Pykare, 19, Cortland, 16:17.9; Craig Reese, 32, Greer, S.C., 16:27.1; Scott Fabry, 23, Poland, 17:10.0; and Josh Bolinger, 23, Warren, 17:30.5.
There were 82 finishers in the race, which raised money for the Stephen Gyomber Scholarship Fund at Maplewood.

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Kyle Evans tossed six shutout innings to help the Akron Aeros beat the Altoona Curve 6-0 Wednesday and give the Aeros their ninth win in 10 games.
Evans (3-0) struck out three and left with a 1-0 lead.
Injured fan files suit
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- A man has filed a lawsuit against Miami (Ohio) University of Ohio and a former assistant football coach accused of knocking the man to the ground during a post-game celebration.
Robert Flaugher, 36, of Pickerington, filed the lawsuit against Miami and Jon Wauford in Cabell County Circuit Court.
Pirates' gameturns back the clock
PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates will "Turn Back The Clock" to 1903 on June 3, when they face the Boston Americans (now Red Sox) at 7:05 p.m. The celebration will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first World Series.
Fans attending the game will experience it as it might have taken place at Exposition Park 100 years ago. Both teams will wear replica 1903 uniforms and caps. Batter introductions will be delivered from atop the dugouts via megaphone.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres rehired coach Lindy Ruff and retained general manager Darcy Regier.
Ruff, the winningest coach in Sabres history, signed a reported three-year deal.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Trail Blazers turned down the Philadelphia 76ers' request to speak to Portland coach Maurice Cheeks as a possible replacement for Larry Brown.
