GIRARD -- The board of education approved the suspension of two employee contracts, citing financial concerns as the reason for the move.
"It's not a reflection of their abilities," board member Jane A. Harris said. "We have to do some cost cutting, and I anticipate both will have positions here in the future."
The board voted 3-2 on the issue after an executive session of nearly two hours Wednesday night.
Board members referred to a levy proposal in the fall that would help bring the two employees -- a secretary and an educational assistant -- back to the school district.
"I don't think it is any secret that there will be a levy on the ballot in the fall," Superintendent Marty Santillo said. The board has not determined the amount it will ask voters to approve in November.
"We're faced with having to tighten our belt financially, and there are only certain areas where you can do that," board member Dr. Richard Ragozine said. "In this community, we can't afford to let this levy fail in the fall."
Dr. Ragozine added that the board has not asked for operating money since 1988.
OHSAA membership
The board also authorized continued membership to the Ohio High School Athletic Association, yet board member Mark Zuppo is concerned about the OHSAA's direction.
"I've e-mailed the OHSAA and I'm really not happy that they have a lot of money in their bank account," Zuppo said.
In order to compete in state athletic competitions, school districts must retain OHSAA membership.
The board decided to table the approval of one-year, limited, supplemental contracts for 12 employees, citing further work needed on the pacts.
In other business, the board recognized five fifth-grade pupils from Girard Intermediate School who received "Best of Show" awards at the school's recent Invention Convention.
