Newspaper boxes stolen
STRUTHERS -- Police discovered several stolen rural-route newspaper boxes dumped along a trail off Broad Street on Sunday. Most of the boxes were broken, making it difficult to determine how many were there, a police report states, but at least eight were from The Vindicator and two from USA Today. Officers left the boxes undisturbed pending an investigation by detectives and determination of jurisdiction.
Teens chosen to serveon youth leadership board
AUSTINTOWN -- Four township teens will serve as members of the Camp Fire prefair board at the Ohio State Fair, which starts today. The teens are: Jessica Ricker, Brittney Henry, Joshua Mann and Ray Breese. Camp Fire USA holds programs to build youth leadership.
Murder suspect arraigned
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bond was set at $1.5 million for Latrell Jackson, 21, of Hilton Avenue, who is charged with murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping. Jackson, arraigned Monday by Municipal Judge Robert A. Douglas Jr., will be back in court Aug. 26 for a preliminary hearing. Jackson is accused of shooting William C. Lee to death Sunday afternoon after the robbery of a Woodford Avenue couple. Jackson and Lee, 17, of East Dewey Avenue are accused of taking part in the South Side robbery. Jackson was overheard saying that he shot Lee accidentally, contending the gun had a hair trigger, reports show.
Vehicular assault charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- The driver of a car that struck 13-year-old Breonna Sims of Lowell Avenue on Friday evening at McGuffey Road and Gray Avenue was arrested Monday on a charge of aggravated vehicular assault. Jody Dougherty, 39, of Atkinson Avenue, who failed a field sobriety test and refused a Breathalyzer test, was initially charged with driving under the influence, police said. Breonna remained in St. Elizabeth Health Center today in stable condition. Dougherty was in Mahoning County Jail.
Robbery, abduction
YOUNGSTOWN -- In an episode listed by police as an aggravated robbery, felonious assault and abduction, five gunmen terrorized three adults and six children on the city's South Side late Monday morning. One of the victims, Willie Palmer, 42, of East Avondale Avenue, was shot in his left arm. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center. One of the adult victims told police that five gunmen in their 20s and 30s forced their way into the Avondale residence. The five forced a woman out of the house at gunpoint before fleeing by car with her. That woman had earlier been held hostage and bound with duct tape and escaped from a house in the 500 block of Detroit Avenue, a witness said.
Hit-skip accident injures 2
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two men were treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center after the car they were riding in was hit by a stolen car that was driven left-of-center by a hit-skip driver at Market Street and Wayne Avenue at 7:25 p.m. Monday, police said. Taken to the hospital were Patrick S. DelBene Jr., 50, of Hilltop Drive, Canfield, who was driving south, and Gus N. Markovis, 68, of Paxton Road, Youngstown, his passenger. Witnesses told police they saw a male driver flee from the stolen car, which was northbound, and run downtown. Based on tips from witnesses, Nichole Dozier, 28, of North Garland Avenue was arrested at the Greyhound bus station and charged with stealing the car from East Evergreen Avenue.
Theft at restaurant
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 64-year-old Akron man was arrested Monday on a theft charge after presenting an invalid credit card at Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant downtown, where the manager said he consumed a shot of liquor, food, beer and coffee worth $13.03. Richard C. Stevanovich of Market Street admitted to police that he had no way of paying for the food and drink, reports show. An off-duty officer in the restaurant witnessed the event.
Pizza delivery man robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A delivery man for Briar Hill Pizza on South Meridian Road was robbed at gunpoint of four pepperoni rolls and an undisclosed amount of cash at 6:45 p.m. Monday when he pulled into a driveway in the 100 block of North Osborne Avenue, reports show. The 18-year-old victim told police that two men approached, one of whom had a gun, and demanded money. After the robbery, the robbers told the victim to go into the rear yard of the house. He complied, and the robbers ran east across Osborne.
