Sculptures offer variety of tributes

Before the rains hit over the weekend, sand sculptures were on display at Mill Creek Park in Youngstown. In the top photo, Ruthie Madden, 13, of Canfield spray paints the lettering to her sand castle sculpture called "Happy 200th Ohio" for the state's bicentennial celebration. Above right, Dave Medicus, 17, of Austintown puts the finishing touches on his sculpture, a tribute to the McKinley Memorial in Niles. Above left, Serena Kennedy, 7, of Austintown plants a flag. The park sponsored the sand castle building contest, and prizes were awarded in various age categories.
