2 men arrestedon drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two East Philadelphia Avenue men were arrested at 12:20 a.m. Sunday and a loaded gun, crack cocaine and marijuana were seized by officers working a Gun Reduction Interdiction Project detail on the South Side.
Joseph McClendon Jr., 33, faces charges of aggravated trafficking in cocaine, mishandling a firearm in a motor vehicle and not having a driver's license.
His passenger, Michael A. Walker, 37, was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana.
McClendon was pulled over on Southern Boulevard after police noticed him driving without headlights on. The drugs and gun were found in the car, police said.
Culverts being repaired
YOUNGSTOWN -- Palmyra Road, between Herbert Road in Ellsworth Township and Turner Road in Canfield Township, will be closed Tuesday while a culvert is repaired. It is scheduled to reopen Wednesday.
Berlin Station Road, between Bedell Road and state Route 534 in Berlin Township, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day through Friday while five culverts are replaced.
House fire was arson
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fire at 3008 Southern Boulevard at 5:30 a.m. Sunday was set, the fire department said.
The fire, which started in the dining room, did about $10,000 damage to the two-story wooden house.
Two suspects fled before police and firefighters arrived. An argument likely resulted in the arson, police said.
Charged with robbery
BOARDMAN -- Township police charged a 26-year-old Youngstown man in a weekend robbery at a sandwich shop.
Johnny Mitchell II of East Philadelphia Avenue is charged with robbery, a felony, and is being held in the Mahoning County jail with no bond.
Police reports say Mitchell entered the Subway at 4927 Market St. at 3:40 p.m. Friday and robbed a cashier of $70 in cash and a cash register drawer.
Police arrested him Saturday evening at his home.
Aggravated menacing
BOARDMAN -- Police are looking to question a 46-year-old township man accused of aggravated menacing and assault.
Police say the man sprayed two Rent-A-Center employees with bug spray and threatened to shoot them at 1:45 p.m. Friday when the employees tried to pick up a stereo from a Hillman Way apartment.
Police later retrieved the stereo but were unable to locate the man.
Sharon teenager diesin car-truck collision
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A Sharon woman was killed when the car she was riding in was hit by a pickup truck at Lamor and North Neshannock roads.
Authorities said Brandee Simpson, 19, of North Water Avenue was pronounced dead by Dr. Charles Zeigler, Mercer County deputy coroner. She died of a head wound. She wasn't wearing a seat belt, police said.
Police said she was riding in the back seat of a car driven by Susan Mendonca, 18, of Todd Avenue, which failed to stop for a flashing red light as it traveled east on Lamor Road around 7:20 p.m. Friday.
It was hit broadside by a pickup truck driven by Keith Osborne, 49, of Nesbit Street, New Castle, traveling south on Neshannock Road.
Mendonca, Osborne and a second passenger in Mendonca's car, Renee Howell, 19, of A Street, Sharon, were treated at local hospitals for minor injuries.
Salem resident has her artdisplayed in NYC gallery
SALEM -- City resident and artist Elizabeth Babb will be exhibiting some of her paintings at the 11th Annual Friends Show at the Ceres Gallery in New York City.
The show will run from Aug. 12 to Sept. 6.
An artist for more than 20 years, Babb earned her bachelor's degree from Kent State University in 1988 and her master's degree from Temple University's Tyler School of Art in 1993. She also studied in Rome for a year.
Babb has won many awards and has shown her work in many venues. Her pieces are in collections in Europe and across the United States.

Curbside tire collections
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township will have two curbside tire pickups, the week of Aug. 4 and the week of Aug. 11. No tires will be picked up after Aug. 15.
