Working to reopen lane

Working to reopen lane
HARMARVILLE, Pa. (AP) -- One southbound lane of Route 28 in Harmar Township that has been closed since a mud and rock slide Thursday evening might not reopen until Wednesday, state transportation officials said.
That means some motorists served by the highway, which connects Pittsburgh to Kittanning 34 miles away, can expect continued delays during their morning inbound commute. The slide occurred between Exit 11 in Harmar and Exit 10 in O'Hara Township.
Motorists have faced 10- to 30-minute delays on the heavily traveled artery since the lane closed.
PennDOT officials initially hoped to reopen the lane by the end of the weekend. But the work is too dangerous to be done at night, so it will take longer than first anticipated, officials said.
Bear caught on campus
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) -- Penn State officials had a bear of a day when a young black bruin made its way onto campus.
The 50-pound bear, believed to be between six months and a year old, was captured Friday.
Police spotted the animal in a brush-filled area between the Forestry Resources Building and the Multi-Sports Complex.
Officials chased the bear, prompting it to climb a tree. A state Game Commission officer, hoisted in a bucket truck, tranquilized the bear.
State authorities said they would take the bruin to Clinton County and release it on Game Commission land.
Bears are visiting Centre County's developed areas, including State College and Bellefonte, more often this summer than usual, police have said.

Officer fires at man
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown patrolman fired a shot at a man who pointed a gun at him, police reports said. The shot missed, and Ronald Pearson, 44, of West Warren Avenue was arrested without further incident on charges of receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon, having a weapon despite a prior felony conviction and driving under suspension.
Patrolman Mark Gillette and Detective Sgt. John Kelty stopped at Glenwood and Sherwood avenues about 9:30 p.m. Friday because a large crowd had gathered. They saw a man on Sherwood with a handgun partially covered by a towel arguing with a man on the other side of the street.
Police yelled for the first man to drop the gun. Instead, he turned and pointed it at Gillette, who fired a shot which hit the man's car.
