BROWNS TRAINING CAMP News and notes from Berea

Still no rookies: None of the Browns' draft picks have signed contracts so far, which is costing them key practice time. Most of the Browns' veterans sympathize with the business side of the NFL, but only to a point. "It definitely hurts you," said second-year running back William Green, who held out last year. "It puts you behind. I'm glad that part is out of the way for me." The biggest concern is over the team's top pick, center Jeff Faine, who is expected to compete for a starting job. "I know Jeff and no one is more eager to be here," said offensive lineman Shaun O'Hara. "He's not someone who just lets everyone else work and sits back until the season starts. We'd like to have Jeff as soon as possible. I know he'll get it worked out."
Double duty: Until Faine signs, O'Hara -- who started three game at center last season -- will handle the center duties. The Browns drafted a long snapper, Ryan Pontbriand, in the fifth round, but he's also not in camp. O'Hara is more comfortable at guard -- he started the other 13 games there -- but is willing to fill in for now. But with just one other long snapper in camp -- Bryan Pittman who signed as a free agent -- O'Hara might have to handle some of the snapping duties. "Let me put it this way," O'Hara said. "I'll be earning my money this week."
Receiver recognition: The cover of this year's media guide features the team's four top wide-outs -- Kevin Johnson, Andre Davis, Quincy Morgan and Dennis Northcutt. "We're happy about it," Johnson said. "But personally, we haven't done much. We can't look at last year's success and think we've got it made. We need to take care of business this season."
Roster moves: The team signed free agent Pittman on Friday and put offensive tackle Chuck Klabo and fullbacks Ben Miller and R.J. Bowers (the former Grove City College standout) on the non-football injury list. Wide-out Frisman Jackson was put on the physically unable to perform list and wide-out Dimitrius Breedlove was waived for failing a physical.
Finally: Coach Butch Davis stopped by the media room before Friday's practice to talk about his off-season, including his eight-day trip to Alaska. "It was great," he said. "No one reached me on the phone." One reporter brought up Buccaneers coach -- and Super Bowl champion -- Jon Gruden, who said he would dance down a Tampa highway in a jock strap if the Bucs repeated as champions. Said Davis: "If we're the ones playing them, I'll dance with him."
