AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees 4, Red Sox 3
BOSTON -- Derek Jeter's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning gave New York the victory over Boston and moved the Yankees 31/2 games ahead of the Red Sox in the AL East. Enrique Wilson led off the ninth with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before Jeter looped a fly to center field off Red Sox closer Byung-Hyun Kim (3-3). Mariano Rivera (5-0) gave up a one-out double to Nomar Garciaparra in the bottom of the ninth and walked Manny Ramirez, but struck out Kevin Millar and got Jeremy Giambi to line out to second base to seal the win.
White Sox 7, Devil Rays 2
CHICAGO -- Frank Thomas hit his 400th career home run, becoming the 36th player in major league history to reach the mark, as the Chicago White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The game was delayed for about three minutes in the fifth inning -- shortly after Thomas' home run -- after a fan poured beer on Tampa Bay center fielder Rocco Baldelli's head. Following Thomas' homer, Magglio Ordonez singled and Carl Everett doubled to left-center. After Baldelli fielded the ball and walked back to his position, he was doused by the fan.
Royals 8, Tigers 3
DETROIT -- Aaron Guiel hit a three-run homer and Runelvys Hernandez won for the first time in more than three months as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers. Angel Berroa added three hits for Kansas City, which won for the second time in five games. Hernandez (5-3), winless since April 22, entered with an 0-3 record in his last six starts. He allowed two runs on eight hits in six innings, walking two and striking out three. Wil Ledezma (3-4) allowed four runs and nine hits in 51/3 innings for Detroit, which has lost seven of eight overall and 1-9 against the Royals.
Blue Jays 5, Orioles 3
TORONTO -- Cory Lidle won for the first time in over a month and Carlos Delgado drove in four runs, including his AL-leading 29th homer, as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles. Delgado's three-run shot off Jason Johnson in the fifth was his first homer in 72 at-bats since July 2 -- his longest drought this season. The All-Star first baseman leads the majors with 103 RBIs and is the first Toronto player to have 100 RBIs in six straight seasons.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Mets 3, Reds 1
NEW YORK -- Al Leiter pitched seven scoreless innings to win for the first time in more than a month as the New York Mets beat the Cincinnati Reds. Jose Reyes had three hits and scored twice for the Mets. Leiter (9-5) allowed six hits and two walks, ending his personal three-game losing streak. He had not won since June 18 at Florida. Reyes scored on a throwing error in the fourth and on Jason Phillips' RBI single in the eighth after his line drive to left was misplayed into a triple by Brandon Larson.
Cubs 5, Astros 3
HOUSTON -- Carlos Zambrano pitched into the ninth inning and hit a tying, two-run homer, leading the Chicago Cubs to victory over the Houston Astros. Moises Alou broke a 3-3 tie with a two-run homer in the eighth and finished with three RBIs to help the third-place Cubs move within 41/2 games of the NL Central-leading Astros. With the Cubs trailing 3-1 in the seventh, Paul Bako singled with two outs and Zambrano hit his second career home run -- both this season -- off Wade Miller.
Marlins 11, Phillies 5
MIAMI -- Consecutive bases-loaded walks issued by Philadelphia relievers Mike Williams and Carlos Silva forced home the tying and go-ahead runs for Florida, which scored eight times in the eighth inning to beat the Phillies. Florida drew five walks in the inning against Williams and Silva to take the lead, then broke the game open on consecutive run-scoring singles by Miguel Cabrera, Alex Gonzalez, Todd Hollandsworth and Juan Pierre. Derrek Lee homered, doubled, singled and walked twice for Florida, which beat Philadelphia for the sixth straight time and moved within four games of the Phillies in the NL wild-card race.
Expos 9, Braves 8, 11 innings
MONTREAL -- Ron Calloway hit a tying, two-out double in the ninth inning off John Smoltz, and Orlando Cabrera scored on a wild pitch in the 11th to give the Montreal Expos a win over the Atlanta Braves. After Montreal overcame an 8-2 deficit to tie the game on Calloway's double, Cabrera hit a one-out double off Jung Keun Bong (6-2) in the 11th. Calloway walked, but Bong struck out pinch-hitter Brian Schneider for the second out. Cabrera stole third and Brad Wilkerson walked to load the bases. Bong bounced his 1-1 pitch to Jose Macias in the dirt, and Cabrera slid home safely with the winning run as catcher Javy Lopez dropped the ball on a desperate tag attempt.
Rockies 7, Brewers 3
DENVER -- Chin-hui Tsao became the majors' first Taiwanese pitcher and won in his debut as the Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers. Tsao allowed three runs on eight hits in 61/3 innings, and Larry Walker and Preston Wilson homered for Colorado, which won for just the third time in nine games since the All-Star break. The Brewers opened a 10-game road trip with their seventh straight loss at Coors Field. Tsao's debut certainly created a buzz at Coors Field, where attendance has declined with Colorado well out of first place in the NL West.
