LITTLE LEAGUE
Brookfield 16, New Miami 4 -- Brookfield rebounded in the Ohio Senior Division state tournament by defeating New Miami of District 10. Greg Tanner had three hits and six RBIs for Brookfield, which took an early five-run lead. Kermie Butler had three hits and Ryan Logan added two more. Justin Wellendorf bested Robert Hamblin for the win. New Miami was led by Erik Pearson and Ryan Hampton.
New Philadelphia 11, Brookfield 6 --On day three, New Philadelphia, an undefeated team from district four, took the lead in the first with a three-run homer by Mark Sexton. The Quakers collected 17 hits. Luke had three doubles and Tanner added five RBIs. Ryan Logan and Keith Patton each added two hits. John Laner got the victory and Josh Reese, Jim Gray, and Mark Sexton each added at least two hits for the winners.
Boardman West 5, Boardman East 0 -- David D. Bernardi threw a complete game shutout and also scored two runs. Danny Popio and Jake Fait each had two hits. Boardman West will play the district (9-10-year-old) title Sunday.
Boardman East 5, Northeast Cleveland 0 -- Brad Byers pitched a complete game shutout, striking out five, in the Little League state tournament at Jefferson. Ray Vinopal hit a triple and single, while Danny Eich hit a single and drove in two runs.
SOFTBALL
OGSO (ages 9-10)
Roth Brothers from Austintown Community Baseball League -- advanced to the finals of the OGSO (Ohio Girls Softball Organization) state tournament at Wellington this weekend. In the quarterfinals, the team defeated Labrae L.A.C. 7-0. Emily Purnell pitched a no-hitter and struck out 21 batters. Brittany Miller, Marissa Mattozzi, Britney Weidenthal and Purnell each had two hits to lead the offense. In the semifinals, Roth defeated Amherst PT Cruisers 7-4. Purnell earned the victory as she struck out 15 batters. The offense was led by Miller, who had four hits, and Megan Carney, who was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Defensive plays were made by Allie Bendel, Amanda Callahan, Weidenthal, Miller and Carney. Roth will play undefeated Lorain-Medina Grafton Pharmacy in the championship game Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Wellington facility, west of Cleveland.
