Winner: American Tyler Hamilton, riding with broken collarbone, in 4 hours, 59 minutes, 41 seconds; his first ever Tour stage.
How others fared: Germany's Jan Ullrich, a Tour winner in 1997 finished 17th, four-time champion Lance Armstrong placed 24th; Spain's Iban Mayo was 37th; Kazakhstan's Alexandre Vinokourov was 50th.
Yellow jersey: Armstrong retains lead in overall time of 70 hours, 37 minutes, 59 seconds -- 1:07 ahead of closest challenger Ullrich.
