SALEM -- Work is to begin Monday to widen and improve a section of Cunningham Road.
"The road is in pretty bad shape," Joe Julian, city service director, said Thursday of the $212,000 project.
Cunningham Road, a main north-south artery, always has been busy. It's seeing even more traffic now that a Wal-Mart has opened on East State Street.
City council authorized borrowing money to pay for the road upgrade. The city will pay back the loan from its capital improvements fund.
Construction will affect a section of the road from Butcher Road, south to the city limits. Plans call for widening the road from 19 feet to 30 feet.
Also planned is resurfacing the potholed road and installing curbs and storm sewers.
Kirilla Construction of Brookfield has been hired to do the work, which will require closing that section of the road for about 45 days. Traffic will be detoured onto state Route 344.
Intersection
Another major street project is set to start in the next two weeks.
The city has hired Central Allied of Canton to rebuild one of the city's busiest intersections -- North Ellsworth Avenue and East State Street.
A large portion of the crossroad is sinking, Julian explained.
City officials have determined that a 4-inch concrete layer on top of a 5-inch concrete base is deteriorating and causing the intersection to sink.
The top and base layers will be torn out and replaced, Julian said.
The project cost hasn't been determined. Money will come from the streets program fund.
The work is expected to take about two days. Traffic will be detoured during that time.
