STUDENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
Lakeview junior leaders
CORTLAND -- Lakeview High School students Kyle Tennant and Adam Kelly were among those selected to attend the 2003 National Junior Leaders Conference on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Silver Springs, Md. Students are invited based on academics and leadership capabilities. They meet with national and international leaders, and they participate in briefings, discussions and hands-on simulation in various areas.
Stauffer is award nominee
COLUMBIANA -- Jeremy Stauffer of Heartland Christian School was nominated for the Wendy's High School Heisman Award, recognizing high school seniors who exemplify "scholar-citizen-athlete."
The teen has a 3.9 grade point average; has volunteered at his church, a school auction and charity runs; has attended a mission trip to Mexico; is a three-year letter winner, captain, MVP and record-holder in track; was a captain and first-year letter winner in soccer; and is a member of various clubs. He was nominated by Principal Dallas Lehman. The award program is a partnership of Wendy's, the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the Heisman Memorial Trust.
Accounting program
Several local high school students are among 43 statewide to participate in the seventh annual Accounting Careers Awareness Program-Ohio, held at Ohio State University in Columbus in June. The five-day program, sponsored by the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Black Accountants included job shadowing and introduced students to accounting, finance, computer technology and management.
Those participating include Edward Anthony, Alliance High School; Kenny Davis, Warren G. Harding High School, Warren; and Darius Salter, Ursuline High School, Youngstown.

Outstanding program
YOUNGSTOWN -- Immaculate Conception School was one of 10 outstanding programs showcased at a National Catholic Educational Association conference at Boston College last month. The schools were recognized as national models for successfully providing a Catholic education to children in communities that cannot afford a Catholic school.
The conference, "Conversations in Excellence 2003: Catholic Schools for Children and Youth in Poverty," was part of the Selected Programs for Improving Catholic Education initiative of the Boston College Lynch School of Education and the educational association.

Dana Vocal Performance
YOUNGSTOWN --The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University will hold its annual Dana Vocal Performance Clinic Aug. 1 to 8.
The intensive workshop explores singing, acting and performing and is open to those who will be in high school or to college freshmen during the 2003-04 school year. It is run by Dana School of Music majors. Tuition is $170. Call (330) 941-3636 or write danavocalclinic@hotmail.com.

DeMeritt appointed dean
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Allegheny College professor Linda C. DeMeritt was appointed dean of the college, effective July 1. The dean is the college's chief academic officer.
DeMeritt has been at the college since 1982. She served as chair of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages; directed work on a grant for classroom technology; and served on the Faculty Review Committee, Faculty Council and Summer Working Group for strategic planning.
The published author holds a bachelor's degree in German, a master's degree in German linguistics and a doctorate degree in German literature.
Westminster bookstore
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The Westminster College Bookstore has reopened in the Andrew J. McKelvey Campus Center, a $14 million center that opened in May. The new bookstore has nearly doubled in size to 2,400 square feet. It is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays while school is in session.
