BASEBALL
Little League district (ages 9-10)
Boardman East 6, Niles 5 -- Joe Markovitch pitched 51/3 strong innings while Cameron DeVito led Boardman's offense with three hits and two runs scored. Steven Higgens bunted home the game-winning run while Bob Diamond earned a save. For Niles, James Coates was the pitcher.
Boardman West 4, Columbiana 0 -- Ryan Gallagher threw a one-hit shutout and struck out 12 batters. Tyler Walls tripled while Jake Fait had two hits. Bryce Minor had Columbiana's hit.
Pony (ages 13-14)
Canfield Pony 13s -- won four games to capture the East Zone West Region championship in the national tournament. Canfield beat Struthers 8-7, Poland 19-4, Campbell 5-1 and Poland 10-9 in the title game. Team members are Eric Davis, Brian Fox, Kevin Heagerty, Bob Herberger, Duane Mancini, Adam Muth, Tyler Reed, Dominic Rich, Steven Schoenfeld, Cody Watkins, Mike Yager and Andrew Zunic. The team is managed by Don Muth and coaches are Joe Reed and Mark Heagerty. Canfield and Poland advanced to the regional tournament hosted by Boardman, starting Friday.
Poland 16, East Liverpool 1 -- Kevin Koval, Jason Simons and Joe Bokros had three hits each for Poland while Brandon Smercansky had two. For East Liverpool, Shawn Mercer and Remo Williams had two hits apiece.
Poland 7, Struthers 4 -- David White, Gannon Hulea, Tim Dennison and Mike Petro each had two hits for Poland.
Poland 10, Campbell 5 -- Kevin Koval led Poland's 15-hit attack with four. Mike Petro had three while Mark Carlozzi and Drew Petro had two apiece. Jason Simons and Mark Carlozzi were the pitchers. For Campbell, Danny Sacui hit a three-run homer. Eligio Bonilla, Marcus Kraynak and Andrew Woodard had two apiece.
Cal Ripken State Championship (ages 11-12)
Mill Creek Blue 9, Zanesville 0 -- Shawn Roman gave up one hit and struck out nine in five innings. Jack Mocker and Phillip Metzinger had two hits each.
Mill Creek Blue 10, Springfield Columbus 0 -- Dan Baco tossed four shutout innings, giving up two hits while striking out six batters. Baco, Donald D'Alesio and Alex Zordich had two hits each.
Mill Creek Blue 2, East Muskingum 0 -- Shawn Roman's two-hitter delivered the state title to Mill Creek. Roman struck out six batters while Jack Mocker and Dan Baco scored.
SOFTBALL
Little League district (ages 9-10)
Canfield 6, Warren 4 -- Kelly Kesner, Melanie West, Samantha Jarmush and Elaina Bettura teamed to limit Warren to two hits.
Canfield 12, Lakeview 3 -- Samantha Jarmush had four of Canfield's 16 hits. Cara Cupler and Elaina Bettura had three hits each while Mackenzie Vaclav had two. For Lakeview, Angela Farone had a hit while Katie Derr, Jensen Hodges and Gina Scorse scored.
Poland All-Stars 11, Boardman All-Stars 4 -- Jenna Modic pitched Poland to victory, while Kelly Martino was one of several hitting standouts. For Boardman, Brooke Meenahan pitched a complete game and drove in two runs, and Alex DiDomenico had two hits.
