HELOISE Computer shopping list ideas shared by readers
Dear Heloise: I read with interest about the woman who puts her shopping list on the computer. I've been doing this for about 11 years for my wife. She shops at one of two stores and, since they are laid out differently, I put them both on my computer. I also created a "groceries on hand" list to print out for her to take with her. This way, if she runs into a sale, she can look at the "on-hand list" and decide if she wants to splurge.
I also created a separate "working copy" list for her to do her inventories on and mark up what she wants to buy. Anything she wants, she simply puts a check mark alongside (if she only wants to buy one, or the amount if she wants more than one).
She also puts the grocery coupons in order of the list. Jim McKay, via e-mail
We got quite a few replies from readers about their ways of making grocery lists. Here's another idea from Judy Padilla of Rancho Bernardo, Calif. She says: "This morning I was reading your column in The San Diego Union-Tribune, and there was an article on shopping lists that said: 'I have my weekly shopping list on my computer. I just print it out, then I highlight what I need for the week, etc.'
"I also do the above, but I take it a step further -- yellow highlight for coupon items and orange highlight for items that are specials of the week, etc. It makes it easier, too, when my husband goes to the grocery store. He can find the items (he has the coupons to refer to), and he can locate the items on special." Heloise
Dear Heloise: In order to keep cholesterol low, I serve my husband "whites over light," made by separating egg whites from the egg yolks into a bowl and whipping them lightly. I pour the egg whites into a lightly oiled (light olive oil or vegetable spray), heated frying pan and cook them until they set. I turn them over and cook them until done. My husband loves them. My mother use to do this, and I do, too, but here's a little hint: Put one drop of yellow food coloring in the middle and stir it a little to make it look like a yolk! Heloise
Dear Heloise: When I bring birthday cupcakes to my son's classroom, I put them in a shirt box and separate them with cardboard rolls from inside paper towels. This keeps the cupcakes safe and beautiful until we reach our destination! A dozen cupcakes fit perfectly with three rolls in between. Maria Leonard Olsen, Chevy Chase, Md.
Dear Heloise: I make my own potato chips by slicing potatoes very thin and frying them until lightly browned in olive oil. I drain them well and sprinkle them with salt -- delicious. An Ohio reader
