NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Beard Road, between Columbiana Road and state Route 617 in Springfield Township, will be closed for a month while the Mahoning County Engineer's Office replaces a bridge. The road will close Thursday, and work is expected to be completed Aug. 22. Traffic will be detoured along Columbiana Road, state Route 165 and Route 617.
Lisbon Road, between Calla and Western Reserve roads in Green Township, also will close Thursday while crews from the engineer's office replace a culvert. The project should be finished and the road reopened later that day. Traffic will be detoured along Calla Road and U.S. Route 62.
Man shot in the hand
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 24-year-old Youngstown man was shot in the right hand on Erie Street.
Police said Joseph Croom of Cottage Grove Avenue refused to talk about the shooting, which occurred about 6:15 p.m. Monday, except to say he had no idea why he was shot and didn't see who shot him. He was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Police said that they found two bullet holes in the left front door of Croom's car and that the shots were fired from inside the car.
Robbed in Youngstown
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 22-year-old Salem-area man said he was robbed at gunpoint at a friend's house on Butler Avenue.
The victim told police he was playing chess and video games at his friend's house at 1:50 a.m. today when two other men at the home demanded his wallet. One of them pulled a gun. The two robbers fled the home with $400.
Campbell break-in
CAMPBELL -- Police are investigating a break-in at a home on Delmar Street, where nothing was reported missing, but photographs of the victim's son were mutilated and thrown into the toilet.
The break-in happened sometime last week while the 20-year-old resident was away. When she returned Sunday afternoon, the report says, the woman discovered her back door had been kicked in, her home ransacked, and all photographs of her son destroyed. Some of the pictures had been smeared with soap, others were in the bathroom sink and toilet, and one was stuck to a door with a knife.
Recorder extends hours
WARREN -- The Trumbull County recorder is extending office hours to accommodate people eager to record documents before fees double next month.
From July 23 to 31, the recorder's office will be open to record documents from 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
The office won't open for other business until the usual time, 8:30 a.m.
The state Legislature increased recording fees to help balance the budget and support the Ohio Housing Trust Fund.
The fee to record a two-page deed, for example, jumps from $14 to $28.
Laptop taken at stadium
STRUTHERS -- A laptop computer containing the statistics for Class B and Mickey Mantle Baseball season and post-season tournaments was stolen from the press box at Cene Field over the weekend.
The theft occurred between 3 and 10:15 a.m. Saturday, the report states.
DUI, child endangerment
STRUTHERS -- Kathleen O'Brien, 47, of Woodbine St., Warren, will be tried in municipal court here Feb. 13, 2004, on charges of driving under the influence and child endangerment.
O'Brien was arrested July 16 after a traffic stop on Midlothian Blvd. She told police she was on her way home from a concert in Boardman and was trying to find her way to U.S. Route 422.
O'Brien refused to take a Breathalyzer test, police report.
Her 12-year-old son was a passenger.
Great Cuts is robbed
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are looking for a man who robbed Great Cuts USA on Mahoning Avenue Monday night.
An employee said a man wearing a ski mask pointed a gun at her and told her to give him money at about 8:30 p.m. The man ran from the store with an undisclosed amount of money.
