Police charge Sharon man in assault

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A Sharon man was arrested after a man was beaten with the butt of a gun outside the Elks Club on Home Street.
Police charged Jamal Derek Strickland, 29, of Cedar Avenue with two counts of aggravated assault, carrying a firearm without a license, recklessly endangering another person, discharging a weapon within city limits and being a former convict who is prohibited from carrying a firearm. Police said the 28-year-old victim approached Strickland at about 3 a.m. Sunday to make amends for a previous argument.
Witnesses said Strickland hit the victim in the head with the butt of a gun, discharging a bullet into the air. The man was hit a second time with the gun and then kicked in the face and head, police said.
Friends took the victim to Jameson Hospital and he was transferred to a Pittsburgh hospital, police said. His condition was not available this morning.
