Royals 7, Mariners 5, 10 innings
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer off Arthur Rhodes (2-2) in the 10th inning, giving Kansas City a victory over Seattle. The Royals took three of four in a series between first-place teams. The AL Central leaders improved to 54-42, their best record at this point since 1989. Kris Wilson (5-0) got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 10th after Jason Grimsley was ejected for hitting Ichiro Suzuki with an 0-2 pitch.
Red Sox 9, Blue Jays 4
BOSTON -- Pedro Martinez pitched seven scoreless innings, getting homers from Nomar Garciaparra, Manny Ramirez and Kevin Millar to lead Boston.
Martinez (7-2) allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked none to earn his first decision in three starts. He has not lost in nine starts since May 9.
John Wasdin (0-1) gave up six runs on six hits and two walks in 22/3 innings.
Garciaparra hit a three-run shot for his 14th homer of the season and added an RBI double. Ramirez had a two-run homer and Trot Nixon hit a two-run triple.
Orioles 7, Angels 6
BALTIMORE -- David Segui's seventh career grand slam backed a fine pitching performance by Jason Johnson, and Baltimore beat Anaheim to complete its first four-game sweep of the Angels since 1965.
Luis Matos had a career-high four hits and Brook Fordyce went 3-for-4 for the Orioles, who finished 8-1 this season against the defending World Series champions.
Johnson (8-4) allowed one run and six hits in 71/3 innings.
Scott Spiezio hit a three-run homer in the ninth for Anaheim, but Jorge Julio got two outs for his 21st save.
John Lackey (7-9) was tagged for six runs and 11 hits in five-plus innings.
White Sox 10, Tigers 1
CHICAGO -- Frank Thomas hit two of Chicago's five home runs and Esteban Loaiza shut down Detroit for seven innings. Loaiza (12-5), a non-roster invitee to spring training, set a career high for wins and snapped a personal three-game skid. He gave up five hits and one run in his first appearance since starting the All-Star game last Tuesday in Chicago.
Devil Rays 15, Rangers 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Aubrey Huff, Al Martin and Travis Lee each hit a three-run homer, leading Tampa Bay to a rout of Texas. The 15 runs equaled a team record and was the most ever at home for Tampa Bay, which is 8-8 in July.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Padres 3, Diamondbacks 2
SAN DIEGO -- Back from the disabled list, Randy Johnson looked more like an ordinary pitcher than a dominating ace.
The five-time Cy Young winner allowed a tying homer to utility infielder Lou Merloni.
Out for 21/2 months following knee surgery, Johnson (1-3) allowed two runs -- one earned -- and six hits in six innings. But he walked two, hit two batters with pitches and was called for a balk in his first start since April 27. The Big Unit threw 100 pitches. His fastball was clocked from 91 to 96 mph, and most of his six strikeouts came on sliders.
Merloni homered in the third, and the Padres went ahead 2-1 in the fourth on third baseman Shea Hillenbrand's throwing error. Ryan Klesko had a pinch-hit homer in the seventh off Mike Myers, his 20th of the season, and the Padres won two straight to split the four-game series.
Astros 6, Reds 3
CINCINNATI -- Jeff Bagwell homered twice to become the 35th member of the 400-homer club,.
Bagwell drove in Houston's first four runs as the Astros beat Cincinnati for the 10th straight time. The Reds have lost seven in a row at home, matching their longest skid since dropping nine straight in Cincinnati in 2001.
Braves 11, Mets 8
ATLANTA -- Pinch-hitter Javy Lopez's three-run homer keyed an eight-run rally in the eighth as Atlanta finished a four-game sweep.
Pinch-hitter Marcus Giles drove in the go-ahead run as Atlanta got nine hits in the eighth to complete a stirring comeback.
Phillies 3, Expos 2
PHILADELPHIA -- Brett Myers struck out 10 and came within one out of a shutout, and Bobby Abreu drove in two runsl.
Pat Burrell hit an RBI double for Philadelphia, which took three of four from the Expos. The Phillies have won eight of 10 overall.
Giants 8, Rockies 4
SAN FRANCISCO -- Alberto Castillo hit a grand slam for his first homer in two years, helping San Francisco complete a four-game sweep.
Rookie Jesse Foppert (6-8), recalled before the game to make the start, matched his career high with 10 strikeouts in six-plus innings. He allowed four runs and three hits.
Rich Aurilia matched his career high with four hits for the first-place Giants, who have won nine of 12.
Cardinals 10, Dodgers 7
LOS ANGELES -- Woody Williams (13-3) hit a tiebreaking home run and allowed four of a record nine homers hit in St. Louis' win over Los Angeles.
