SOCCER Lagos lifts San Jose over United; Scurry shuts out Breakers in tie



The Earthquakes won for the first time in five games.

WASHINGTON -- Manny Lagos' tiebreaking goal in the second half lifted San Jose to a 2-1 victory over D.C. United on Saturday and snapped the Earthquakes' four-game winless streak.
Lagos received a pass at the top of the penalty area and sent a shot into the open goal.
San Jose (7-3-6) ended its skid despite missing regular forward Landon Donovan, who scored four goals against Cuba for the U.S. National team on Saturday.
Nick Romando turned away three short-range scoring chances late in the first half and two more in the second to keep the United (4-6-6) close.
D.C., which had a chance to reach .500 for the first time since June of last season, took a 1-0 lead when Ali Curtis scored his first of the season on a breakaway in the 13th minute.
Chris Roner tied it for San Jose in the 38th minute, taking advantage of a misplay by a D.C. defender deep in the penalty area.
Wizards 1, Crew 0
COLUMBUS -- Igor Simutenkov scored in the 58th minute, and Tony Meola made nine saves for his 46th career shutout.
Wizards midfielder Chris Klein dribbled down the right wing past the Crew defense and sent a pass to Simutenkov, who scored with a volley from eight yards.
Columbus (5-6-4), which entered tied for the fewest goals allowed in the MLS, had shut out its last two opponents and went 261 minutes without allowing a goal. Kansas City has scored a league-high 32 goals.
Fire 3, Revolution 1
NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Rookie Damani Ralph scored and set up goals by Kelly Gray and Justin Mapp as Chicago beat New England.
Ralph scored his seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 51st minute after New England's Daouda Kante tackled Jim Curtin in the penalty area.
New England's Taylor Twellman scored his 10th goal in second-half stoppage time to end Zach Thornton's shutout bid.
Chicago improved to 7-4-4, and New England dropped to 5-5-6.
WUSA
BOSTON -- Briana Scurry made two saves and earned her WUSA-leading seventh shutout of the season in the Atlanta Beat's 0-0 tie with the Boston Breakers on Saturday.
Atlanta had a number of scoring chances but Breakers goalie Karina LeBlanc made seven saves to earn her second shutout this season.
Atlanta, the WUSA's top team, improved to 9-3-5. Second-place Boston is 7-4-5. Atlanta has 32 points with four games remaining, while Boston has 26 points with five games left.
The Breakers appeared to scored in the sixth minute but the goal was waved off because of a hand ball. Dagny Mellgren crossed the ball to the middle to Maren Meinert, but it bounced off her left wrist before she scored.
In the final minute of the first half, LeBlanc made a big left-hand save on Homara Sawa. In the 72nd minute, LeBlanc stopped Ifeoma Dieke and followed that up two minutes later with a big right-hand save on a shot in the slot from Sawa.
Courage 1, Spirit 0
CARY, N.C. -- Nel Fettig scored in the 25th minute Saturday as the Carolina Courage beat the San Diego Spirit 1-0.
Carolina (6-7-3) outshot the Spirit 14-9, and Kristin Luckenbill earned her third shutout of the season. San Diego (6-5-6) lost for the second time in three games.
