SOFTBALL
Little League (11-12s)
Canfield won four games to take the district championship and advance to the state tournament. Canfield beat Poland 3-1 behind a two-hitter by Chrissy Porter. She struck out five. Kelly Sklenar had two hits. Kalie Luklan threw a four-hitter with five strikeouts as Canfield beat Struthers 9-4. Luklan, Jill Halfhill, Kelcie Herberger, Katie Griswold and Bianca Biondillo each had two hits. In the third game Canfield blanked Boardman 2-0. Porter threw a one-hitter with five strikeouts. Alexis Wyatt and Biondillo each had two hits. Canfield won the district title over Boardman 13-6. Herberger came on in relief in the second inning a gave up just two runs to earn the victory. Luklan had four hits including two doubles and a triple while Herberger went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Also on the team were Kelly Kollat, Alannah Kutan, Colleen Griffin, Alexis Wyatt and Kelly Fening. The manager was Rob Luklan and the coaches were Tom Porter and Brian Halfhill.
BASEBALL
Little League (11-12s)
Boardman West 13, Newton Falls 1 -- Eric Walters threw a one-hitter for Boardman. Cory Gonci had three hits, while Cameron Shaffer, Kyle Jones, Pat McFall and Brad Koch each had two.
Babe Ruth (14s)
Youngstown 14, Mt. Vernon 3 -- Corey Collins struck out 12 in just five innings as Youngstown all-stars beat Mt. Vernon in the opening game of the Ohio state tournament held at Don Edwards Park in Newark. Matt Katich was 3-for-3 with three doubles, while Tony Brunetti had two doubles. Jesse Moses singled three times Collins added a triple.
