Millions of people have turned to Reader's Digest's "Complete Guide to Sewing" for guidance since the book was first published in 1976. Now there's an updated version that takes the best instructions from the original and adds information geared to today's equipment and sewing techniques.
"New Complete Guide to Sewing" covers all the basics of the craft, including equipment, fabric, hand and machine stitches, fitting, sewing techniques, tailoring, and alterations. A chapter on patchwork and quilting was added.
The book also contains more than 1,200 photos, illustrations and diagrams, 200 more than the original, as well as instructions for 20 clothing and home-decor projects.
The book is priced at $35.
Paint Pourri masksstrong odors
Room freshener now comes in a new container: a paint can.
A new paint additive called Paint Pourri is designed to combat odors, including smoke, pets and even the smell of the paint. It leaves a fragrance that will last four months to a year, depending on the size of the room.
The product comes in a one-ounce pouch and is stirred into a gallon of latex or latex enamel paint.
It also can be used with oil-based paint to reduce the paint odor, but it won't have the air-freshening properties.
Paint Pourri comes in eight fragrances. The suggested retail price is $3.95.
