Eddie Jr. outof 49ers' family
SAN FRANCISCO -- With the wiring of some $70 million to former owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. at the beginning of the month, Denise DeBartolo York and John York of Canfield have come into full possession of the San Francisco 49ers.
The payment was the final portion of the original agreement between siblings Eddie and Denise as part of the split of family assets.
The late Eddie DeBartolo Sr. bought the team from the Morabito family in 1977 for $17 million, with DeBartolo Jr. becoming the owner. Since then, the 49ers have won five Super Bowls and have grown into one of the NFL's flagship franchises.
Experts say the team, even without a new stadium, is worth more than half a billion dollars.
According to those close to the deal, Eddie DeBartolo received the payment and the DeBartolo Corporation's real-estate holdings. Denise got the team, the right to keep the DeBartolo Corporation name, a small airplane and a building in Youngstown.
The split of assets occurred after a battle for the team when Eddie was forced to give up ownership while under investigation for illegally acquiring a Louisiana riverboat gambling license.
