RAY SWANSON | Keystoner McClendon on shaky ground

Capsules for the 32 NFL teams at the start of training camp. The top six in each conference are the playoff teams in order of how far they advanced last season.
AFC
OAKLAND (13-6)
Open camp: July 24, Napa, Calif.
Last year: Led by QB Rich Gannon and revamped defense, reached Super Bowl for first time in 19 years. Lost 48-21 to former coach Jon Gruden and Buccaneers.
Strengths: The old guys. League MVP Gannon is back and still has Jerry Rice and Tim Brown as top targets. WR Jerry Porter and RB Charlie Garner also emerged as premier players. Defensive leaders Rod Woodson, Trace Armstrong and Bill Romanowski also return.
Weaknesses: The old guys. Can the six players 35 or older continue at same level? Many considered last season the Raiders' last chance, but many of the same faces return.
Additions: Rookie WR-TE Teyo Johnson. CB Phillip Buchanon, team's first-round draft pick last year, back from wrist injury; DT Dana Stubblefield, another old-timer, from 49ers.
Subtractions: CB Tory James; DT Sam Adams, DE Regan Upshaw, S Anthony Dorsett, WR James Jett and RB Terry Kirby.
TENNESSEE (12-6)
Open camp: July 25, Nashville, Tenn.
Last year: Rebounded from 1-4 start to win 10 of 11 and reach AFC championship game. QB Steve McNair didn't miss a start despite string of injuries.
Strengths: QB with healthy McNair, WR with Drew Bennett improving daily and rookie Tyrone Calico offering big, fast target. DE Jevon Kearse if healthy after two operations on left foot.
Weaknesses: Kearse must prove foot is healthy. Secondary. Eddie George must do better than 3.3 yards per carry.
Additions: WR Calico, S Donnie Nickey, and RB Chris Brown, all rookies. Brown is insurance for George.
Subtractions: DT John Thornton, CB Donald Mitchell, S Rich Coady, LB Randall Godfrey, DT Henry Ford, WR Kevin Dyson.
PITTSBURGH (11-6-1)
Open camp: July 25, Latrobe, Pa.
Last year: Kordell Stewart was benched and Tommy Maddox replaced him at QB. Rallied to beat Cleveland in wild-card game but lost in overtime to Tennessee.
Strengths: Passing, with Maddox throwing and Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress and Antwaan Randle-El catching. Defensive front seven is strong, and TE is deep. So is RB, even if oft-injured Jerome Bettis is a local bus now instead of express.
Weaknesses: Secondary was largely responsible for defense allowing 30 or more points eight times more than in any game in 2001.
Additions: SS Troy Polamalu, the first-round draft pick; TE Jay Riemersma, OL Todd Fordham, LB Clint Kriewaldt.
Subtractions: Stewart; OT Wayne Gandy; S Lee Flowers.
Prospects: They're not in bad salary cap shape, so the Steelers should be ready for a couple of more Super Bowl runs. Need Maddox to continue success that made him league's comeback player.
NEW YORK JETS (10-8)
Open camp: July 21, Hempstead, N.Y.
Last year: After starting 2-5, rebounded behind new starting QB Chad Pennington and won AFC East. Beat Indianapolis 41-0 in wild-card round, then lost to Oakland 30-10.
Strengths: Curtis Martin had his eight straight 1,000-yard rushing season despite injuries last year. LaMont Jordan is excellent backup. Pennington progressed after taking over for Vinny Testaverde and is now team leader. DE John Abraham is one of NFL's top pass rushers.
Weaknesses: DT Josh Evans was suspended indefinitely for substance abuse. Added Chester McGlockton but still have little depth up front, and rookie Dewayne Robertson will be counted on immediately. Also need improvement from 2002 first-rounder Bryan Thomas, who struggled at DE.
Additions: Robertson; WR Curtis Conway; G Tom Nutten; PK Doug Brien.
Subtractions: WR Laveranues Coles; RB/KR Chad Morton; G Randy Thomas; FB Richie Anderson; S Damien Robinson; PK John Hall.
INDIANAPOLIS (10-7)
Open camp: July 23, Terre Haute, Ind.
Last year: RB Edgerrin James wasn't himself after returning from torn knee ligament. Marvin Harrison managed record-setting season without another receiving threat, and Colts made playoffs in Tony Dungy's first year. But 41-0 playoff loss to Jets exposed many weaknesses.
Strengths: RB, QB, DL and Harrison at WR.
Weaknesses: LB, secondary, a complement for Harrison.
Additions: TE Dallas Clark, S Mike Doss, both draft picks; DT Montae Reagor.
Subtractions: LB Mike Peterson, WR Qadry Ismail.
CLEVELAND (9-8)
Open camp: July 22, Berea, Ohio
Last year: Slipped into playoffs in final week of the season, first postseason appearance in their new incarnation. Lost to Pittsburgh 36-33 in the wild-card round, blowing a 17-point lead.
Strengths: Rookie RB William Green rushed for 887 yards after a slow start. WRs Kevin Johnson, Quincy Morgan, Dennis Northcutt and Andre Davis provide plenty of targets for QBs Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb.
Weaknesses: Young group of LBs must replace veterans released in salary cap dump. Secondary in a year in which Browns play many of the league's top WRs.
Additions: First-round pick C Jeff Faine; second-rounder LB Chaun Thompson; third-rounder DB Chris Crocker; LB Barry Gardner.
Subtractions: LBs Jamir Miller, Earl Holmes and Dwayne Rudd; CB Corey Fuller; C Dave Wohlabaugh.
NEW ENGLAND (9-7)
Open camp: July 23, Foxboro, Mass.
Last year: 2002 Super Bowl champs started with three straight wins then slid back. Missed playoffs on last day of season.
Strengths: Defensive depth; QB.
Weaknesses: OL, RB. TE unless 2002 first-round pick Daniel Graham improves.
Additions: LB Rosevelt Colvin, S Rodney Harrison, FB Fred McCrary, WR Dedric Ward, DE Ty Warren, RB Mike Cloud.
Subtractions: FS Tebucky Jones, FB Marc Edwards.
MIAMI (9-7)
Open camp: July 25, Davie, Fla.
Last year: Ricky Williams led league in rushing, DE Jason Taylor led NFL in sacks. QB Jay Fiedler missed six games with broken thumb after 5-1 start, and Dolphins lost last two to miss postseason for first time in six years.
Strengths: Williams is among NFL's best RBs while defense returns most major contributors from third-rated unit and added LB Junior Seau among others.
Weaknesses: Fiedler has been inconsistent and now has Brian Griese looking over his shoulder. OL is so-so. Seau, 34, has slowed down and is hurt a lot.
Additions: Seau; Griese; S Sammy Knight; CB Terrell Buckley; WR Derrius Thompson.
Subtractions: DT Jermaine Haley; TEs Desmond Clark and Jed Weaver; DE David Bowens.
DENVER (9-7)
Open camp: July 25, Englewood, Colo.
Last year: Won six of first eight games, but stumbled and missed the playoffs for the third time in four years.
Strengths: Offense, including RB Clinton Portis, last year's rookie of the year. Quick, hard-hitting LBs.
Weaknesses: Inexperience in the secondary; aging OL with key members coming off serious injuries. Questions at QB, where Jake Plummer takes over for the released Brian Griese.
Additions: Plummer, DT Daryl Gardener, T George Foster (first-round draft pick), S Lee Flowers.
Subtractions: Griese, DT Chester McGlockton, RB Olandis Gary, FS Izell Reese, CB Denard Walker.
BUFFALO (8-8)
Open camp: July 23, Pittsford, N.Y.
Last year: QB Drew Bledsoe revived franchise after 3-13 record in 2001 but offense was hurt by patchwork defense that was among NFL's worst.
Strengths: Offense featuring Bledsoe, WR Eric Moulds and RB Travis Henry, and fronted by OTs Jonas Jennings and Mike Williams. Takeo Spikes and Jeff Posey join London Fletcher in revamped LB corps.
Weaknesses: Young secondary. Special teams: Rian Lindell is Buffalo's fourth placekicker since Steve Christie was released prior to 2001 season.
Additions: Spikes; Posey; DT Sam Adams; WR Bobby Shaw. First-round draft pick RB Willis McGahee could miss entire season recovering from knee surgery.
Subtractions: WR Peerless Price; TE Jay Riemersma; FB Larry Centers; DE Chidi Ahanotu; PK Mike Hollis.
SAN DIEGO (8-8)
Open camp: July 23, Carson, Calif.
Last year: Chargers began 6-1 in Marty Schottenheimer's first year, then lost seven of nine to miss playoffs for seventh straight season. While Chargers' lawyers try to get new stadium in San Diego, team moved training camp to Home Depot Center, 20 miles south of Los Angeles.
Strengths: Offense now that WR David Boston has been signed to complement Pro Bowl RB LaDainian Tomlinson.
Weaknesses: NFL's worst pass defense will have new starters at every secondary and will miss leadership and work ethic of LB Junior Seau and SS Rodney Harrison.
Additions: Boston; FB Lorenzo Neal; CB Sammy Davis; OL Solomon Page; S Kwamie Lassiter.
Subtractions: Seau and Harrison, aging and expensive, took fall for defensive collapse.
KANSAS CITY (8-8)
Open camp: July 19, River Falls, Wis.
Last year: Great offense built around RB Priest Holmes, who was having brilliant season until late-season hip injury. Chiefs missed playoffs because of league's worst defense.
Strengths: Offense. TE Tony Gonzalez also figures to play more prominent role after training camp holdout last year.
Weaknesses: DL, which needs breakthrough by second-year tackle Ryan Sims and big year from newcomer Vonnie Holliday; secondary, although return from injury by safety Jerome Woods could help.
Additions: First-round RB Larry Johnson. LB Shawn Barber and DE Holliday.
Subtractions: No major ones.
BALTIMORE (7-9)
Open camp: July 28, Westminster, Md.
Last year: Despite extensive salary-cap related purge and loss of LB Ray Lewis to shoulder injury midway through season, youthful Ravens stayed in playoff contention until next-to-last week.
Strengths: Defense, which returns almost everyone from unit that was good even without Lewis.
Weaknesses: Little QB experience. Chris Redman, whose first year as starter was cut short by injury, has edge over rookie Kyle Boller and Anthony Wright.
Additions: Receiving bolstered with Frank Sanders and Marcus Robinson. RT Orlando Brown improves thin offensive line, and top draft pick Terrell Suggs could make impact as pass rusher.
Subtractions: DE Michael McCrary; WR Brandon Stokley.
JACKSONVILLE (6-10)
Open camp: July 25, Jacksonville, Fla.
Last year: Third straight losing season led to firing of Tom Coughlin, who was replaced by first-year head coach Jack Del Rio.
Strengths: RB Fred Taylor stayed healthy and ran for 1,314 yards. P Chris Hanson (44.2 yard average) was team's only Pro Bowl representative.
Weaknesses: Still looking for WR to play opposite Jimmy Smith; J.J. Stokes is top candidate. Team speed on defense.
Additions: First-round pick QB Byron Leftwich; DE Hugh Douglas; LB Mike Peterson; Stokes.
Subtractions: Coughlin; backup RB Stacey Mack.
HOUSTON (4-12)
Open camp: July 25, Houston.
Last year: High point was 19-10 win over Dallas in first game as franchise. Offense was worst in NFL and rookie QB David Carr was sacked NFL-record 76 times.
Strengths: Defense has a year of seasoning. Even with improved offense, team may still have games like 24-6 win over Pittsburgh in which Texans had only 47 yards of total offense, NFL record low for winning team.
Weaknesses: OL, with Tony Boselli retiring prematurely because of chronic shoulder problems.
Additions: First-round pick Andre Johnson should add immediate help at WR. RBs Stacey Mack and RB Domanick Davis.
Subtractions: OT Ryan Young; LB James Posey.
CINCINNATI (2-14)
Open camp: July 28, Georgetown, Ky.
Last year: Repeatedly shuffled QBs, finished with worst record in franchise history, replaced coach Dick LeBeau with Marvin Lewis, who has more authority than recent predecessors.
Strengths: Running game featuring Corey Dillon, deep corps of receivers led by Chad Johnson.
Weaknesses: QB Jon Kitna is prone to mistakes, secondary is thin and undistinguished.
Additions: Lewis; Backup QBs Shane Matthews and Carson Palmer; MLB Kevin Hardy; CB Tory James; DE Duane Clemons; DLs Carl Powell and John Thornton; rookie G Eric Steinbach. Palmer was No. 1 overall pick in draft.
Subtractions: LB Takeo Spikes; FB Lorenzo Neal; QB Gus Frerotte.
NFC
TAMPA BAY (15-4)
Opened camp: Friday, Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Last year: Won Super Bowl in first season under Jon Gruden after steadily improving from NFL's worst franchise to contender under GM Rich McKay and Tony Dungy.
Strengths: NFL's stingiest defense; Gruden's offensive mind.
Weaknesses: OL, RB.
Additions: LB Dwayne Rudd; G Jason Whittle; C John Wade; RB Thomas Jones.
Subtractions: S Dexter Jackson; LB Alshermond Singleton.
PHILADELPHIA (13-5)
Open camp: July 25, Bethlehem, Pa.
Last year: Reached NFC championship game for second consecutive season, losing to Tampa Bay at home.
Strengths: Donovan McNabb is among NFL's top quarterbacks, OL is solid and secondary may be league's best.
Weaknesses: Lack No. 1 receiver and pass-rush specialist, and have inexperienced returners. Also rebuilding LB corps.
Additions: Rookie DE Jerome McDougal, LB Mark Simoneau, FB Jon Ritchie. RB Correll Buckhalter returns from knee injury.
Subtractions: DE Hugh Douglas, LB Shawn Barber and return specialist Brian Mitchell.
SAN FRANCISCO (11-7)
Open camp: July 25, Santa Clara, Calif.
Last year: Won NFC West, rallied from 38-14 deficit to beat Giants in wild-card game, then lost in Tampa. Owner John York fired coach Steve Mariucci, hired Dennis Erickson.
Strengths: Pro Bowl combo of QB Jeff Garcia and WR Terrell Owens as formidable as ever. Solid OL adds rookie T Kwame Harris. Young, speedy defense should continue to mature.
Weaknesses: Owens seems determined to test Erickson, skipping final three minicamps. Defense was green and injury-plagued, and didn't upgrade. Mariucci's steadying hand is gone, and Erickson's people skills will get a workout.
Additions: Harris, DT Anthony Adams, both rookies, but no important free agents.
Subtractions: Mariucci, DT Dana Stubblefield, WR J.J. Stokes.
ATLANTA (10-7-1)
Open camp: July 25, Greenville, S.C.
Last year: Squeaked into playoffs despite losing three of last four, then became the first visitor to win postseason game at Green Bay. Michael Vick was key all year, setting three NFL rushing records for a QB and finishing with 16 TD passes and 8 INTs.
Strengths: QB, with Vick returning from his breakout season and solid backup in Doug Johnson; secondary should be stronger with additions of CB Tyrone Williams and SS Cory Hall.
Weaknesses: The backfield, where coach Dan Reeves must find a way to split time between RBs Warrick Dunn and T.J. Duckett. Also must find a replacement for FB Bob Christian, who retired.
Additions: WR Peerless Price, CB Tyrone Williams, SS Cory Hall, LB Keith Newman, WR MarTay Jenkins, TE Lamont Hall, LB Twan Russell, CB Tod McBride.
Subtractions: CB Ashley Ambrose, WR Shawn Jefferson, TE Reggie Kelly, OT Michael Thompson, LB Mark Simoneau, LB John Thierry, SS Henry Jones.
GREEN BAY (12-5)
Open camp: July 22, Green Bay.
Last year: Won NFC North, but lost bye in final-game defeat, then lost wild-card game to Atlanta, first ever playoff loss in Green Bay. Injuries part of problem.
Strengths: QB, unless Brett Favre finally proves destructible; RB with healthy Ahman Green and solid corps of backups.
Weaknesses: OL, where OTs Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher are coming off injuries; DE, where Joe Johnson missed almost all of last season after signing $33 million free-agent contract.
Additions: CB Al Harris; LB Nick Barnett, No. 1 draft pick.
Subtractions: WR Terry Glenn, whose trade to Dallas opens up starting job for Robert Ferguson or Javon Walker; LB Nate Wayne; CB Tyrone Williams.
NEW YORK GIANTS (10-7)
Open camp: July 24, Albany, N.Y.
Last year: Won last four games as offense flourished after coach Jim Fassel took over play-calling. Earned wild-card slot but blew a 38-14 lead over San Francisco and lost 39-38 in playoff game marked by officiating controversy on the final play, an aborted game-winning field-goal attempt.
Strengths: Overall offense led by QB Kerry Collins, RB Tiki Barber, WR Amani Toomer and TE Jeremy Shockey, who had huge impact as rookie last season. Starting DL, and CBs Will Allen and Will Peterson.
Weaknesses: Defensive depth. DL wore down in SF game as backups put no pressure on Jeff Garcia. Terrible special teams upgraded in off-season. OL is question for second straight year, but line coach Jim McNally has worked wonders with little.
Additions: Long-snapper Ryan Kuehl plus host of special teamers led by return man Brian Mitchell, P Jeff Feagles and K Mike Hollis. RB Dorsey Levens and DL Keith Washington. Addressed DL depth with first two picks -- DT William Joseph and DE Osi Umenyiora.
Subtractions: TE Dan Campbell, OT Mike Rosenthal and G Jason Whittle. Rosenthal and Whittle started last year, part of no-name group molded by McNally, who has several more unknowns waiting to move in.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (9-7)
Open camp: July 25, New Orleans.
Last year: After 6-1 start, stumbled late for second straight year. Coach Jim Haslett blames heat of training camp and hopes training in new indoor facility will keep team fresh longer.
Strengths: QB Aaron Brooks is expected to be ready after offseason shoulder surgery. Offense should be strong.
Weaknesses: Seven new starters on defense must come together quickly.
Additions: CB Ashley Ambrose; S Tebucky Jones; LB Orlando Ruff; DT Johnathan Sullivan, No. 1 draft pick.
Subtractions: S Sammy Knight.
ST. LOUIS (7-9)
Open camp: July 24, Macomb, Ill.
Last year: After winning 2001 NFC title, Rams started 2002 at 0-5 and never recovered. Injuries to Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Orlando Pace and Aeneas Williams were devastating. After three straight years as No. 1 in yardage, fell to 13th.
Strengths: Faulk, when healthy, is elite all-purpose running back. Warner's broken pinky and hand allowed Marc Bulger to emerge as effective alternative, going 6-1 as starter.
Weaknesses: Defense is thin. Big comeback is needed from 35-year-old CB Williams, recovering from broken leg. LBs unproven. Unsigned OT Orlando Pace hasn't participated in offseason workouts after being designated franchise player.
Additions: DT Jimmy Kennedy, first-round pick, could make immediate contribution. RT Kyle Turley, DB Jason Sehorn.
Subtractions: CB Dre' Bly; TE Ernie Conwell; RB Trung Canidate; WR Ricky Proehl.
WASHINGTON (7-9)
Open camp: July 28, Ashburn, Va.
Last year: Steve Spurrier, facing steep learning curve as rookie coach, realized castoffs from Florida can't make his offense go in NFL. Five starting QB changes.
Strengths: Team speed, OL, LB.
Weaknesses: Safety, DL line depth; RB.
Additions: WR Laveranues Coles, G Randy Thomas, G Dave Fiore, RB Trung Canidate, KR Chad Morton, DE Regan Upshaw, K John Hall. Plus WR Taylor Jacobs, another Florida player, who was No. 1 draft pick.
Subtractions: Workhorse RB Stephen Davis.
SEATTLE (7-9)
Open camp: July 26, Cheney, Wash.
Last year: Injuries all season, but offense flourished and defense improved in closing weeks. After season, Mike Holmgren relinquished GM duties, stayed as coach.
Strengths: QB Matt Hasselbeck averaged 476 yards passing in final six games; WR Koren Robinson emerged; RB Shaun Alexander had team-record 18 TDs; LB Anthony Simmons.
Weaknesses: Defense allowed NFL-high 152.6 yards rushing per game; OT Walter Jones could hold out for second straight year.
Additions: Defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes; GM Bob Ferguson; LB Randall Godfrey; DE Chike Okeafor; DT Norman Hand. G Steve Hutchinson, QB Trent Dilfer and LB Chad Brown return from injuries.
Subtractions: P Jeff Feagles; K Rian Lindell.
CAROLINA (7-9)
Open camp: July 25, Spartanburg, S.C.
Last year: Under new coach John Fox, the defense improved to No. 2 overall in the NFL and helped Panthers rebound from the 1-15 season of 2001. Struggled on offense.
Strengths: NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Julius Peppers is back after missing the final four games of the season while on suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy. He'll anchor one of the DLs in league with Brentson Buckner and Mike Rucker.
Weaknesses: Aging Rodney Peete heads into training camp as the starting QB. OL still needs upgrading.
Additions: QB Jake Delhomme, WRs Kevin Dyson and Ricky Proehl and RB Stephen Davis. OT Jordan Gross, C Bruce Nelson and TE Mike Seidman all promising rookies.
Subtractions: Dyson, who tore his Achilles' tendon in spring workouts and will miss the entire year. Veteran TE Wesley Walls.
MINNESOTA (6-10)
Open camp: July 25, Mankato, Minn.
Last year: Stumbled under first-year coach Mike Tice, but rebounded to win last three games and finish second in underwhelming NFC North. Hoping momentum carries over.
Strengths: If QB Daunte Culpepper cuts down turnovers, Doug Chapman or rookie Onterrio Smith can replace injured RB Michael Bennett and WR Randy Moss keeps head in games, can be one of league's top offenses.
Weaknesses: Defense under new coordinator George O'Leary. DT Kevin Williams, first draft pick, should help free Chris Hovan to do more, and free-agent LB Chis Claiborne was solid addition.
Additions: Williams, Claiborne, CBs Denard Walker and Ken Irvin, OT Mike Rosenthal.
Subtractions: P Kyle Richardson, K Gary Anderson.
DALLAS (5-11)
Open camp: July 26, San Antonio.
Last year: Third straight 5-11 season prompted owner Jerry Jones to replace Dave Campo with Bill Parcells, the first Dallas coach willing to take on Jones since Jimmy Johnson left nearly a decade ago.
Strengths: Defense, especially in secondary led by safeties Darren Woodson and Roy Williams, plus No. 5 overall pick Terence Newman at cornerback.
Weaknesses: RB, where Emmitt Smith was cut for cap reasons and went to Arizona; QB, where Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter have shown little.
Additions: Parcells; Newman; TEs Dan Campbell and rookie Jason Witten; P Toby Gowin; FB Richie Anderson; WR Terry Glenn.
Subtractions: Smith; DT Brandon Noble; WR Raghib Ismail; FB Robert Thomas.
ARIZONA (5-11)
Open camp: July 25, Flagstaff, Ariz.
Last year: Decimated by injuries, especially at WR, lost nine of last 10 in first season in NFC West. Offense ranked 27th, defense 29th. GM Bob Ferguson, offensive coordinator Rich Olson and DB coach Kevin Ramsey were fired.
Strengths: OL. It will try to clear way for RB Emmitt Smith, star signing in offseason. RB Marcel Shipp is coming off good year, rushing for 834 yards and averaging 4.4 per carry.
Weaknesses: WR. David Boston, Frank Sanders and MarTay Jenkins left. Jason McAddley is top returning receiver. Ranked last in sacks, 30th against run and 29th against pass.
Additions: Smith; QB Jeff Blake; S Dexter Jackson; FB James Hodgins; WR Marquis Walker; rookie WRs Bryant Johnson and Anquan Boldin; rookie DE Calvin Pace.
Subtractions: Top three WRs; QB Jake Plummer; S Kwamie Lassiter. RB Thomas Jones, a major disappointment, was traded to Tampa Bay. FB Dennis McKinley made most spectacular exit: His contract was terminated after he was arrested for allegedly operating a marijuana smuggling ring.
CHICAGO (4-12)
Open camp: July 25, Bourbounais, Ill.
Last year: Staggered to 4-12 after a 13-3 season. RB Anthony Thomas was ineffective behind banged-up OL. Couldn't stop the run with NT Ted Washington out with an injury most of the season. Playing home games in Champaign while Soldier Field was being redone didn't help.
Strengths: All-Pro LB Brian Urlacher; overall defense, although loss of LB Rosevelt Colvin will hurt.
Weaknesses: Offense, unless line perks up and QB Kordell Stewart comes through.
Additions: Renovated Soldier Field; QBs Stewart via free agency and Rex Grossman (draft); DE Michael Haynes (draft)
Subtractions: QB Jim Miller, Colvin, S Damon Moore, WR Marcus Robinson; OT James "Big Cat" Williams.
DETROIT (3-13)
Open camp: July 27, Allen Park, Mich.
Last year: Ran win total to five in two years with Matt Millen as president and failed to win on road for second straight year. Coach Marty Mornhinweg was fired when Steve Mariucci became available.
Strengths: Off his record, Mariucci is best Lions coach in years. OTs Jeff Backus and Stockar McDougle provide protection for second-year QB Joey Harrington.
Weaknesses: Slow offense with no-big play running back, inexperienced QB and too many questions at WR. .
Additions: WR Charles Rogers, second overall pick in draft, and LB Boss Bailey, second-round pick. Free agent cornerback Dre' Bly; LBs Earl Holmes and Wali Rainer; and WR Shawn Jefferson.
Subtractions: LB Chris Claiborne.
