NEW YORK -- The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), based in Princeton, N.J., and the College Board, a national nonprofit membership association whose goal is to prepare, inspire and connect students to college and opportunity, have launched the Young Epidemiology Scholars (YES) student competition. The program encourages high school juniors and seniors to learn more about epidemiology, the basic science of public health. Epidemiology explores patterns of disease, illness and injury within populations, with the goal of developing methods for prevention, control and treatment to improve health.
The YES student competition is open to high school juniors and seniors and will award up to 120 scholarships to regional and national winners. Two national winners each will receive a $50,000 scholarship. The YES program also includes a teacher competition, now in its second year, that highlights innovative epidemiology curricula.
Online registration and further details about the competition are available at www.collegeboard.com/yes. The deadline for entries is Feb. 6, 2004. YES will host regional competitions in the spring. Twelve finalists will travel to Washington, D.C., in May 2004 for the national competition.
Control for brain tumors
PITTSBURGH -- Treating benign brain tumors with gamma knife radiosurgery resulted in long-term tumor control in 95 percent of patients, according to a study by University of Pittsburgh researchers presented at the quadrennial meeting of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in New York.
The study evaluated 285 consecutive patients who underwent radiosurgery for benign brain tumors between 1987 and 1992 at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The study found that tumor volume reductions usually occurred slowly, beginning as early as six months after the gamma knife procedure, but continuing even years later. The majority of tumors (63 percent) eventually reduced in size.
