SIGHTS TO SEE: Above, horses head for the homestretch at Mountaineer Race Track. Adding slot machines has allowed Mountaineer to boost its horse-racing purses, which has attracted better-quality racing fields. At left, The Grande Hotel at Mountaineer has quite a few more amenities than the original lodge. Guests can enjoy a fine-dining restaurant, spa, jewelry store and fitness center. The hotel has added 258 rooms. Attached to the hotel is a convention center that can accommodate seminars for nearly 2,000 people. Mountaineer began its transformation into a gaming and resort facility in 1994. Mountaineer owners have more land to develop, and a golf course and upscale homes are on the drawing board.
