GET INTO THE SWIM Make a splash with the right fit

Take a look at the following expert advice on how to find a swimsuit -- bikini or not -- that is comfortable, stylish and flattering. The tips are from Tropi-Ties online magazine and catalog; the Ladies' Home Journal Web site at www.LHJ.com; and the swimsuit experts at Lands' End.
Details: Fill out shortcomings with details such as ruffles, shirring or gathers. Control abundance with support linings. Remember, Lycra is God's way of saying, "Hold that tiger."
Distractions: Dark colors, lined suits and delicate prints are slimming, both wet and dry. Light colors, flimsy fabrics and shiny fabrics add dimension to slim figures. Neon and bright colors look best on dark or tanned skin. Cutouts, fabric changes and pattern motifs create focal points that divert attention from flaws. Eighty-five percent of swimsuits never touch the water.
Big on top: If you want to remain buoyant as a two-pack of empty water bottles, you'll need the extra support of an underwire top. Shop at a store or Web site where you can order top and bottom sizes separately.
Short legs: Find a suit that is cut high on the thigh. This makes the leg look much longer.
Curvy figure: Try a suit that is not too skimpy, like a tankini. And pick one that calls attention to your whole body, not one particular part. All-over patterns help do this.
Pear-shaped figure: The goal is to draw attention upward, away from your hips. Look for a suit that is darker on the bottom and has patterns on top or detailing around the neckline.
Tummy trouble: To downplay your tummy, choose a suit with detailing at the neckline, diagonal prints, side shirring or a special control panel at the tummy. If you're proud of your long, shapely legs but need a little tummy coverage, try a super-high-cut tankini.
No waist: To give the illusion of a more defined waistline, look for a tankini. Or try on a bikini with a belt or sash at the waist.
What to accent: Flatter a beautiful bustline with a deep V-halter top. Strong shoulders come out of hiding in a scooped halter-style tankini or racer-back suit.
