Chosen for conference
CANFIELD -- Patrick Burgan, a Canfield High School sophomore, has been selected to attend the 2003 Congressional Student Leadership Conference in Lake Forest, Ill. The invitational leadership program is for academically talented and promising young leaders. Selection is based on academic achievement and extracurricular or community involvement. Burgan is a member of his school debate team and has performed with Easy Street Productions, appeared in local television commercials and done numerous voice-overs for local companies.
All-American scholar
WARREN -- John F. Kennedy High School student Stephen Orlosky, son of Mark and Susan Orlosky of Girard, has been named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. The award recognizes students with a 3.3 or higher grade-point average who are selected by a school professional or other qualified sponsor.
10th in the nation
BOARDMAN -- Josh Murphy, a 2003 Boardman High School graduate, earned a ranking of 10th place in the nation at the National Forensic League's National Speech Tournament in Atlanta last month. Competing in the Humorous Interpretation event, Josh earned the highest finish since 1988 for a BHS student in a speech event and is the eighth BHS student to reach the semifinals in a national speech contest. He is the son of John and Diane Murphy and will attend Ohio State University in the fall.
Students qualify for nationals by placing first or second in regional meets. Other 2003 BHS graduates competing were Stephanie Gent, Pat Landers, Noelle Nackino and Abbey Wood. Andrea McConnell, who will be a senior in the fall, also competed.
