Jail officials to add phones for inmates



NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County Jail officials say they expect to see additional revenue by adding more telephones for inmates.
The county prison board approved adding two telephones to each housing unit, making a total of five telephones in each unit.
The system allows inmates to make only collect calls and the county will get a 25-percent commission on each call, according to Brian Burick, prison board president.
The money will be used buy new equipment for the jail, he said.
Burick noted telephone conversations are monitored by jail officials and the telephone system can block specific telephone numbers. Inmates are allowed to talk a maximum of 20 minutes per call, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
American Telecharge from Mullica Hill, N.J., is adding the additional telephones.
In other business, the prison board hired the following people:
ULisa Zarilla of New Castle as a treatment counselor at a pay of $9.70 per hour.
UJoni Salzano of New Castle, work release coordinator, $9.70 per hour.
UKimberly Clayton of New Castle, receptionist, $6 per hour.
UVicki Chiarini of New Castle was hired as a part-time secretary at $6 an hour.
