Farrell man drowns in Conneaut Lake
CONNEAUT LAKE, Pa. -- A Farrell man drowned in Conneaut Lake despite efforts of his friends and authorities to save him, police said.
William M. Jarrett Jr., 20, was boating with friends when he decided to go for a swim about 100 feet offshore near the Iroquois Yacht and Boat Club around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
Witnesses told authorities that Jarrett became tired and his friends threw life jackets to him, but strong winds and a strong current prevented him from reaching them.
His friends tried to maneuver the boat close to him, but Jarrett slipped under the water, police said. A woman on the boat jumped into the water but was unable to find him, police said.
John Treacy, chief of the Conneaut Lake Volunteer Fire Department, was in the area assisting physically disabled people with watercraft and rushed to the scene.
He dove to the bottom of the lake and pulled up Jarrett.
Jarrett was given CPR and transported to Meadville Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:38 p.m. by emergency room doctors, police said.
