SHARON, Pa. -- Police said a burglar stole jewelry, loose change and collector's coins from a home in the 200 block of Baldwin Avenue. The burglary occurred between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday while the resident was away, police said. The burglar entered through a first-floor window, police said.
YSU enrollmentrises more than 5%
YOUNGSTOWN -- Enrollment is up more than 5 percent this summer at Youngstown State University, say data released Wednesday.
The university has 5,036 students taking classes this summer, an increase of 252 students, or 5.3 percent, from the 4,784 that were on campus last summer, according to preliminary numbers that will be reported to the Ohio Board of Regents.
Enrollment is counted in two ways: head count reflects the number of students enrolled, and full-time equivalent shows the number of students enrolled full-time. Officials said full-time equivalent enrollment at YSU is up nearly 5.5 percent this summer.
Enrollment at YSU has steadily risen since fall semester 2001.
Last fall, enrollment increased nearly 4 percent.
Police seek driverwho hit motorcyclist
SHARON, Pa. -- Police are looking for the driver of a car that rear-ended a motorcyclist on the Shenango Valley Freeway around 5:45 a.m. today, leaving him lying face down on the road. Joseph Mihalcin, 52, of Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage, was in stable condition in Sharon Regional Health System.
Police said he was westbound on the freeway entering a construction area at Service Avenue when he was hit from behind by what witnesses described as a Ford four-door car with Ohio registration plates.
The driver fled, but police said witnesses got the license number and the car was later found in Youngstown. Police were searching for the driver.
Well inspectionsin Columbiana County
LISBON -- Beginning Oct. 1, well and septic inspections will be required before the sale of a home can be finalized. The Columbiana County health board approved an inspection measure Wednesday. The legislation is to ensure that faulty water and sewer systems aren't passed from one owner to another, board member Shawn Apple said today. The health department will do the inspections. If a well or septic system fails, an agreement to fix the system must be reached between the owner and buyer before the sale can go through.
Windows shattered
SALEM -- Someone is continuing to shatter vehicle windows with a BB or pellet gun, police said. Several vehicles were damaged earlier this week. On Wednesday, police received another report that a window was broken on a vehicle parked in the 1300 block of Ridgewood Avenue.
Heat-illness program
SALEM -- The Salem Community Center will present a program to teach people how to avoid heat-related illnesses. Heat cramps and heat exhaustion will be among the topics. Cost of the hourlong presentation is $5, except for center members, who get in free. '50s car cruise setin downtown Lisbon
LISBON -- A '50s car cruise will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday in downtown Lisbon. There will be entertainment by The Figley Brothers, and Hula Hoop and Twist contests. Classic car owners can compete for honors of best of show, oldest car and car traveling the farthest. A 50/50 raffle will benefit the Akron Children's Hospital spina bifida clinic. The cruise is sponsored by the Steel Trolley Diner and Quinn Chevrolet.
Antique show and sale
SALEM -- The 39th annual Salem Kiwanis antique show and sale will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Centennial Park at Pershing Street and Park Avenue. More than 150 antique dealers will be on hand, rain or shine. There is no admission charge. Proceeds benefit Kiwanis service projects.
