Police cite several in underage-drinking case

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Varsity Club on Market Street got an unexpected visit about 1 a.m. today by 11 police officers checking out complaints of underage liquor sales. Citations were issued to:
UWillie Stewart, 21, of Clearmount Drive, permitting minors on liquor premises.
UGary Thornton, 36, of Volney Road, same.
UChanelle Thornton, 20, of Volney Road, same.
UKeith A. Young II, 20, of Franko Court, Boardman, underage possession of alcohol.
UA 16-year-old Eastern Avenue, Campbell girl, same.
Police also issued curfew violation citations to seven boys and girls who range in age from 14 to 17. The city's curfew is 11 p.m. for anyone under 18.
Police said there were several other young people in the bar but, because of the large number of patrons compared to the number of officers, it was difficult to apprehend everyone suspected of breaking the law.
